Aiofe had been given something to eat and a place to rest. When the woman came to tend her leg she allowed it, more and more each time, until her leg was mended. When the wolves of the mountain came to look for her again they would not find her. The bindings on her leg were chewed off, left in tatters.

Away she went. Away she was. The climb down the mountain was difficult but not impossible. After that came the open hillside, where Aiofe found something to drink and many small things to chase after. Nothing would fill her belly between that last meal and the present, however.

She walked alone, following a trail through the meadow.
Beyond him, the mountains loomed.

It was hard to enjoy the bounty of the meadow when Turmeric knew what lay another day's journey away. Or rather, what he thought he knew, though even his supposed knowing was as good as knowing itself.

If he thought too much about the canyon, he knew he would turn away. So rather, he poked around the berry bushes still ripe with winter fruit and let his knowing roam over these rather than on the truth beyond the precipice. Truth would come in time. Now, he had found a fruit he did not know and found himself half-buried in its spindling branches all strewn with tiny red berries, while his thoughts converged in a singular attempt to determine the best way he might break off a bundle to exploit for study without catching any of the plant's sap or juices in his mouth.
