Erzulie had told her about the wolves in the sound and Rosalyn had seen the tension in her wife, speaking about them. Her own thoughts were split. Let them have it, with dislike, but the fact that they had been silent made her prickle. If they were to be neighbors, why had they laid this claim without attempting to speak?

Would they seek to make war on the cliffs? Her eyes hardened at the thought, gazing down at the sound's forests below. She hadn't broken her promise, would not, but the urge was strong. She wished to confront them, to ask why they had not made themselves known.

Chacal and Erzulie would manage. But the thought of Erzulie there, without her at her flank, struck deep. Restlessly she turned away, walking instead towards the northern rise. She couldn't look at it any longer.
