they were plentiful, and she had never seen them before. a touch of arrogance was in her, thinking them easy prey.

most of the morning and slice of afternoon, and the hound had only captured driftwood. fur soaked in full and heavy, only likely catch would be a cold.

she dripped on the edge of the lake, watching as the flat-tailed builders swam so near, the thought they might be taunting her repeated itself.
With her children so close to the weir, Vex had been patrolling it frequently. She caught the scent of a stranger on the breeze, and she began to lope towards the smell. She loosed a loud, booming bark that clearly said visitors were unwelcome.

she was still, to not betray surprise. her eyes were quick to find the source.

vuk. kestenjast. oči ugarci.

she straightened. 

her coat wet and heavy, but muscle beneath was the same. she could run faster. but the wolf, it could run longer.

The creature before her was not one she had seen before. It was definitely a canid, but certainly not a wolf. The Queen leered, lips pulling back to expose yellowed teeth. She loosed a snarl, then charged — she would have no trespassers on her land! If the thing didn't move, and fast, it would be met with teeth.
the wolf made it evident the hound was an intruder. she had to respect the truth of it, by means of quickly leaving.

she bounded away, and picked up speed.

The other was faster than Vex, but that did not dissuade her from chasing. Snarls and barks could be heard, loud, booming sounds that caused saliva to fly from her maw, all the whole racing, chasing the intruder. She thought, with time, she could catch up.

her runner paws sunk into the pliable earth around the lake. 

flat-tailed weir-builders dove out the way.

she felt the fine fur of her forelegs cake with mud.

Where the dog travelled the shore, Vex kept further away. The mud, sand and water would only slow her down. She was gaining on the creature, and Vex let out a mad cackle, pushing herself harder. She'd not had a run like this in ages.

Eventually, she would chase the intruder out, and Vex would howl, victorious once again.
