today chickadee decided to brave the borders once more.
remembering what her brother had told her, the girl puffed up as she stepped to the edge of the lake. she would practice first. chickadee barked at her reflection, tail bottlebrush. she barked again for good measure.
good. the girl turned away and scampered inland. if no one stopped her, chickadee would continue her roaming toward the boundarylines.
Sorana occasionally went to the lake to stare out at the little island she once called home, but she always kept a vast distance between herself and the edge of the water. The black lake depths that once mystified her now fueled her nightmares. The gentle lapping of wind-driven waves was no longer soothing to her ears. Nothing about the lake was inviting.

Nevertheless, she went to look more often than not, and today, she spotted Chickadee dreadfully close to the shore. Sora's heart fluttered with fear. She sucked in a breath, prepared to call out and warn her friend of the danger, but Chickadee seemed to sense something amiss about the lake. Two shrill barks later, she was running back into the woods.

Sorana hastened to follow, glad to be away from the water despite her yearning for the island. Galloping along in the Blackthorn's wake, she called out, Deedee, wait for meee!
"rana!" chickadee exulted. she stopped and turned around to bat at sorana's ears with her paws. "i goin' to border. find bad guys!" she hadn't stopped to think about the repercussions of this.
expecting that her friend would come along, chickadee moved off, albeit at a slower pace. two butterflies caught her attention, followed by a squirrel, a worm, a beetle, and an acorn.
each of these were pointed out to sorana. chickadee said each name slowly and loudly, tripping over a few in the process. "what'syer favorite?" she asked in a rush.
Sora giggled and ducked her head, dancing away from Chickadee's battering paws with a flourished twirl. The giggles faltered in her throat when Chickadee admitted she was going to the borders to find bad guys; wouldn't Maia and mom be upset with them for wandering so far?

She didn't have time to think about it or formulate an argument if she didn't want to fall behind, so Sora hastened after her friend, and for a time, forgot about their forbidden destination.

Oh! Sora said when Chickadee posed her question. Mama showed me a diff'ren' kinda worm. It walked all funny, like... She lacked the words, but arched her back up in an arc to demonstration. It's a... Umm... Inchyworm! Didja ever see one of those?
u wanna fade & have an updated one? <3

"an inchywurm?" chickadee goggled at her friend, trying to imitate sorana's oddly arranged back. she stumbled once but attempted it again. "what an inchywurm do?" what did it eat? where could they find one? what color was it? "i not see one afore!"
all these questions and more, threatening to burst off the tip of her mouth again.
That would be good, thank you. Sorry for falling off the face of the earth with this. <3 I'll fade here.

I denno, admitted Sora, giggling, but it walks all inchy and funny! Teya had pointed it out to her, but not explained its purpose, its lifestyle, or anything about it. It was green and lived in the leaves, and that was the extent of her inchworm expertise.

C'mon, le's go find one! Sorana squealed, taking off into the trees with her friend on her heels.
