her mind moved.

she thought of kigipigak's words.

she thought of samani and rodyn. sialuk had listened to the spirits of moonspear. she had gone for a time. kukutux' heart was heavy, to lose two daughters.

but she had not lost them.

now she must only pray that samani would be ready to take up the helm of moonwoman one day.

today she called for her deer-child. they would go to the place of silver light. as they walked, kukutux thought of the sons in nativgik and how to strengthen their villages.

she had not extended the same finishing lessons to the girl and to wilwarin, not wishing to overstep her boundaries. but the doe-child remained in moonglow. and she was anaa. "did you meet the young hunters, kivaluk and akkuma?"

The doe followed her matriarch with a quick step, her strides short and eyes kept forward. Akaagigan sat astride her shoulders as a jockey might sit astride a prize horse, contenting himself with the leaves of mint she had tucked into her ruff before she left the ulaq this morning.

Her eyes strayed towards her anaa when she spoke.

I saw them, but I admit, I never got the chance to speak to them.
not deer-girl but bird woman. kukutux looked softly at the young woman who was also her daughter.

she tested the word on the girl's ears.
