Keldfar had dispersed from his birth pack in summer, high-spirited, free as a bird, and had let the wind take him where it would. Overcome with the knowledge that he was now only responsible for himself, he spent days on end studying the flora and fauna of the tundra, but moving steadily south, until the land began to change and he came across plants and animals he had never seen. He studied these, too, but the niggling in the back of his mind that told him that summer would not last forever kept him moving. He tasted and experimented where he could, and silently stalked animals simply to watch them, but all the while, he moved.

And eventually, with autumn in full swing, in all its red, orange, yellow, brown, gold glory, he found himself here, beside this creek. The sound of the water soothed and attracted him, and he wondered if he might catch a fish before moving on, and following the water until it led him somewhere new. Or perhaps he'd lay low in the grass and wait to see what creatures came to take a drink from the life-giving waters. He decided to do this, instead of fishing, and found a nice patch of tall grass to settle down in, praying the wind would not change direction and give his position away.
