it was without pomp that the hunt-leader found the plateau of blacktailed deer.
and it was with a bristle that he found the killer's scent. augur did not see that she had often walked outside the border. instead the wolves who did come and go carried with them her scent, in their fur and upon the pads of their paws.
augur did not approach. he did not make himself known, and if addressed he would retreat. surely their eyes saw him. he took no meat from the territories outside their home. he marked nothing. he was only present, easily and silent and observant in the snow.
he put himself downwind and far from the borderlines. but he watched.
and then he turned, meaning to return to the rise.
