The wilderness had ceased to be anything recognizable some time ago. Gone were the trailheads, the man marks, and the tar road; gone was the fence line, the humming of power lines, and the smell of meat atop fire.

There was snow everywhere. Ice too, where the water dominated. The dog didn't mind any of that so much - his fur was long and insulated - and he was mindless enough to find goodness where it mattered.

Head low, he snuffled against the topmost layer as he found smells he had no name for, except it was something alive, and he followed its trail until he ran right in to a frosty little bush. The commotion caused a dump of snow across his shoulders and he borfed laughter.
