the storm had swallowed the gang whole and spat colt out on the other side.
alone.
snow and ice streaked every part of him. his eyes felt just about froze. colt had shut them with difficulty and just kept going, hollering back to the others now and again.
when he had come to the edge of stone and the smallest ledge which offered a scant protection, he had grunted and settled with harshness, all of him sore, paws red and running and half-frostbit.
but the others had not come.
the others had not arrived.
colt passed out.
when he came to, the wind still howled, if not more than before. he hauled himself to his feet and shouted out for them, for each in turn! for sadey and marston and lonesome and reno.
he bayed into the wind until his throat was raw.
and when he sank back against the rock once more, colt knew he was truly alone.
