it was nice, traveling with @Antigone. the boy was thoughtful and informative. his questions were deep. sorcha began to make a game of how many smiles she could elicit from beneath his solemn red mask.
the days turned to weeks. the land warmed beneath the brimming sun. snow melted and grass took its place as king of all foliage, preparing for wildflowers, bees, butterflies.
they hunted small game. once, sorcha had found the long-dead carcass of a fawn. that had fed them for a while, at least until a brown bear mother with cubs had come to claim it.
she was getting hungrier now. long travel and no feast had whittled her down to muscle and bone. the scent of deer drew her up the rise into a wide plateau. "how are you doing, anti," she whispered to her companion, worried that he was in the same condition as she.
Rib bones showed through the boy’s thin coat of fur. His features were gaunt, with protruding cheekbones and deep-set eyes. The length of his legs appeared more pronounced, giving him a spindly and wicked appearance as he trotted beside the girl.

Antigone had found that the longer he was away from Epoch, from Reyson and Meadow, the better he felt about his decision. The only regret that he carried with him was the glimmer of sadness that had pooled in his mother’s eyes. She would have delivered her pups, he thought. The boy could only hope that everything had gone well, that Tamar was given a new son who would never disappoint her.

Sorcha’s voice pulled Antigone’s ears, swiveling toward her. His navy eyes lifted to her face. Shadows had formed around the blue of his gaze – deep set and haunting.

I’m okay, Sorcha. The words sounded like a mournful ghost’s.

Are you hungry?

Antigone felt the rumbling demand from within his belly.
"always," sorcha laughed, though she was unnerved by the darkness smeared around antigone's eyes. "i figured we could stop here for the night, maybe hunt." hunting. frogs, birds, weasels, stoats, fish, worms, grubs, carrion, new berries — she had sickened from those — had all made their way down the gullets of the two, and it was not enough.
he was skinny and so was she. it was becoming harder to recover from exhaustion, easier to sink into it.
she pawed the earth.
"we might need to — look for help." her tone was reluctant. "see if we can find someone to hunt with us."
