two does, a half-grown fawn, and a buck passed beyond lasher where he sat crouched in the underbrush, breath shallow with the desire to remain unseen. the man had been tallying the numbers of the larger prey-beasts still left to them in their woodlands; soon they would depart, and snows would lap at the bared earth.

thirst gripped him suddenly; rising from his hidingplace, lasher trekked to the stream still edged in ice from the cold air of early morning. the frigid draughts brought clarity to his mind, though ever so pensively, the man peered into the shallows, wondering once more the question that now gnawed at him from time to time with bitter insistence.

Alas, Amber sees the two beasts trekking along. Her jaws began to water eagerly. How long has it been since she actually had deer? She didn't care. All that ran through her mind was: Catch it! Catch the deer! She didn't notice the wolf across her she was so hungry. She snuck up closer, ears flattened and body almost dragging against the ground. When she was at range, she leaped out of cover and chased down the doe, since it would be the easiest target. As she was closing in at its rear, she leaped, snagging only at its tail. Damn, she thought angrly. But she wasn't giving up. She bolted for it again, and pounced, this time hitching a ride on its back for a few seconds. It gave her some time to get a good grip near its neck. But she could only do that for a few seconds, because the doe reared up and flipped her of. Amber got right back up and chased it again. Not letting you get away little punk!

a flash of fur and teeth raced past him; lasher straightened, bewildered. murkwater eyes widened as he watched one of the newer plateau wolves leapt onto the back of one doe, only to succumb to gravity's pull. reminded grimly of finley's mad dash, taltos lunged forward to stop the girl before the buck whirled to impale her on savage tines.

stop! he ordered with a growl, eyes flashing in the hale light, worry filling his heart.

Amber could here him in the distance, but didn't stop. Too late to stop. She was way too close.... As she charged the doe, the buck came running towards her, antlers ready to do damage. But she was way too experienced. She swerved out of the way of the antlers and quickly ran after the doe. As she flanked its side, she dragged it to the ground and chomped on her neck. Once again the buck came charging, so she had to turn tails once again. She glanced at the other wolf, willing for his help. Then she gave chase once again. She couldn't keep this up more longer.

the fool acted with supernatural strength but subpar intelligence, swinging carelessly toward the buck. lasher snarled, tail reared above his hips as he snapped not for the enraged deer, but for the wolfess herself. with the sting of his teeth he intended to drive her out of harm's way, and impress upon her the severity of the situation.

She couldn't run too far. The sting from the other wolf made her yelp and stopped her. She watched as the two deer ran away. She growled in rage. "I had that right in my grasp," she snarled. She was aware that he was just trying to get her away from the buck, but she wasn't used to wolves pulling her away from her kill, and the fact he bit her didn't make her feel better. Again she looked back at the beasts, but they were out-of-reach now. She grunted angrily.
<style type="text/css">q {font-family: 'Gentium Basic'; font-style: strong; font-size: 16px; color: #4d924d; text-shadow: 0px 0px 5px #99C199;} p {margin: 40px 80px 0px 80px; font-family: 'Georgia', serif; color:#000000; text-align:justify; text-indent:0px; font-size:20px'} </style>

lasher was not one to press his rank upon those below him, but amber's lack of deference, coupled with her mad, stupid dash toward the flailing hooves of the deer, angered him. teeth flashed as he lunged toward her with a growl, hoping to grab her muzzle between his jaws and force her into some semblance of submission.

She saw as the other wolf lunged at her, teeth barred. She dodged just a bit, but the razor teeth snagged into the right side of her snout. She yelped as the blood trickled down her face. Then she rolled to get at least some separation As she got up, she snarled, ready for another attack. But she knew that the fight wouldn't be won by her. She was too small, let alone young. But she still had some fire left in her.

amazed, he circled. do you know who i am? he demanded of the girl. i am your gamma, he snarled, surprised by even himself. down! before i tell dante what you have done here today. lasher hurried toward her again, seeking submission for the third time.

She quickly dodged and then growled, "I yield!" She ducked her head into submission. She muttered, "Forgive me, for I'm not used to the pack ways, yet." She licked the side of her muzzle, tasting some blood. For it sting, it was not excruciating. If the wolf got a perfect shot, it would defiantly hurt more. She swiped a paw over her muzzle, and studied her paw. Studied the blood.
<style type="text/css">q {font-family: 'Gentium Basic'; font-style: strong; font-size: 16px; color: #4d924d; text-shadow: 0px 0px 5px #99C199;} p {margin: 40px 80px 0px 80px; font-family: 'Georgia', serif; color:#000000; text-align:justify; text-indent:0px; font-size:20px'} </style>

lasher glared at her; he did not believe the girl. had she not the instincts of a wild wolf? she bled, but he did not care, or so he told himself; and he watched her sternly. what is your name?

"Amber," she moaned. She did not give the wolf eye contact, she was to busy swiping her paw over her nose. She then looked up again into the wolves eyes and said, "I apologize again for my actions. My old pack played by different rules." She licked the side of her muzzle and added softly, "Worst rules. It's only instinct for me to lash out at you." She stretched a bit glancing up at the wolf just to check if he would nip her back unexpectedly. Better not! she thought aggressively. She still felt sour for losing her kill. "What's your name?"
<style type="text/css">q {font-family: 'Gentium Basic'; font-style: strong; font-size: 16px; color: #4d924d; text-shadow: 0px 0px 5px #99C199;} p {margin: 40px 80px 0px 80px; font-family: 'Georgia', serif; color:#000000; text-align:justify; text-indent:0px; font-size:20px'} </style>

he felt rather guilty as he watched her mend herself, but held firm. her behaviour was vaguely apologetic, but he thought she was rather resentful of the deerherd's escape. fear not; simply listen to your superiors next time about.

i am lasher, he answered her in the next breath. what is yours?

She went up and sat down again. "Amber," she repeated herself. The snag felt alot better than before, so she stopped fiddling with it. It was a bad habit of hers to over-tend her wounds. She had been doing it for as long as she could remember. It still embarrassed her when she was around anyone. She grinned as she recalled the first time she tried to catch a squirrel as a pup, but it ended up with it scratching her leg. She had been caught by her old packmate when he was out patrolling. Probably licking it for hours that day. She remembered herself being paranoid by the first sight of blood.
<style type="text/css">q {font-family: 'Gentium Basic'; font-style: strong; font-size: 16px; color: #4d924d; text-shadow: 0px 0px 5px #99C199;} p {margin: 40px 80px 0px 80px; font-family: 'Georgia', serif; color:#000000; text-align:justify; text-indent:0px; font-size:20px'} </style>

how long have you lived among us, amber? lasher asked, not fully taken with the idea that she knew how how packwolves acted. she seemed at once both timid and calloused, and he wondered how she had come by her odd nature, though once the girl had submitted, taltos no longer judged her.

"Not too long." She had just joined the pack say, a month ago perhaps? At that time winter's icy claws were creeping around the corner. Hopefully it won't take lives with it. She had seen winter do dastardly things to the weak. Only the strongest shall live, her old Alpha once said, It's either take, or be taken. And I would let winter gladly kill any wolves who are not strong enough to last the day! His snarl echoed in the girl's mind every time winter came around. As much as she hated the wretched beast, she took those words to heart.

her replies were brief, and lasher was ready to allow her on her way. for what trade do you intend, amber? he asked after a moment's pause. it would do well if he knew such information, for during his next meeting with her, taltos could ask her of her progress toward the role. once she had told him, the man dismissed the girl, warning her once more of the respect she bore those above her in the ranks.
