Moonspear was quiet tonight.

The moonwomen’s songs had ended.

Their bellies were full with meat.

Stars twinkled overhead. It was a crisp and clear autumn evening. A half-moon, a pale waxing gibbous, hung low in the sky.

Vapor fog rose from each of Njord’s breaths as he enjoyed the silence.

Already, his furs had begun to thicken. Winter was not so far away.

Emotionally, he was tired. Trapped in that liminal space between tragedy and peace.

He thought of Towhee Jr. Had he sent her too far away? Had her quest been successful? What of Sable? Had he joined his sister?

Then, Ray came to mind. How was his son’s journey? Had he found the purpose he fervently sought?

Swordfish. Mercy. Would he ever lay eyes upon his son and daughter?

These questions went unanswered.

Soon, their family would grow again. He thought of Meerkat shrouded in the glow of motherhood once more and smiled.

Then, his mind turned to the present. Orca. Seal. The father felt he had much to teach them before the season’s end.

The village was strong.

For now, he laid in quiet repose as he ordered his mind for the days ahead.
