A huffing cough sputtered saliva from her lips.

The sun dwindled on the horizon, an entire day spent climbing this damn mesa only to get nothing. Adaliah’s chest hurt with the exertion, with an infection only barely staved off. She huffed again, the sound backed by a cough.

Living alone was a terrible tragedy for any social creature, but alone for Adaliah was something unknown. She’d grown up in the crush of bodies of a servant’s quarters, all packed in rows and on top of each other. Even the courtesan’s halls, some of the younger girls would come and seek comfort with their elders.

Another huff, another cough. The dust was certainly not helping her any, she considered as she kicked up sandy soil with every step.

At least the sunset is pretty.. Something murmured in her head.
