Hearthwood was more or less on fire. First the trespasser, then Reverie and Boone taking turns at trying to die — Mae was pretty over it. Especially with what felt like half a dozen new mouths to feed within the borders.

It was a relief, then, when she and @Blackbird were assigned a task that would take them away from all the chaos for a time. Mae carried the pelts slung across her back as she guided the other girl through the mountains, occasionally complaining about the weather or pointing out interesting landmarks.

You ever been on the other side of the mountains? Mae wondered as she put the pelts on the ground in the area they'd chosen to settle for the evening. It had been her original goal, to reach the other side and see what was out there. Now she finally had the chance — but she felt more wary of it than anything.
