it was time to leave the desert behind. the old temptress had irked him something fierce, and had only hardened his resolve to find his wayward father. after eating and resting, gathering his strength for a few days, he departed.

surya kept to the meadow, a jaundiced eye toward the red rocks to the southwest. the mesa was where ursus had regrouped after the violent death of their queen, preparing for war to avenge her.

where were they now? he wondered. had they fought? won? died?

he didn't know; he'd left. and didn't that make him just as bad as aditya, in a way?

the man snorted, shaking his head to clear the daft thought, and kept on across the hard-packed snow. tendrils of long, yellowed grass rose out of it like whiskers, and he longed suddenly for spring.

he slowed to a trot, then geared even further down, taking a second to orient himself and figure out his next move.
