black eyes glowering, apollyon watched Wolf from across the space of the cave inside his mind. the blackness oozed in soft pulses of green.

his flesh burned, searing with sunfire, with flames of ice.

Wolf grinned a slow and dawning grin, and apollyon saw how sharp they were, each tapered to preternatural points.

a shudder ran through his spirit, which had grown so hungry in the long darkness.

apollyon eyed the meat, which had neither moved nor changed. he hated at once that he considered it; in self loathing he realized he had crept out across the rocky floor and now sat morose above the strips of red and white.

Wolf cocked his head.

what stops you? if i say you may eat, why do you not feel that you can?

because it is wrong.

but it is my body to give.

anger leapt in the face of the young man, and he dashed his paw against the ugly twists of flesh.

but they did not move.

frightened, he fell back.

Wolf exhaled, a slow, disappointed sound. that hunger is not hunger. it is fever. the heat is killing you, causing your mind to curl as if it were a leaf in a fire.

so i'm dying? so you're not real?

you're dying. but i am very real.

Wolf's odd eyes shifted, milk and gold.

you need strength to pass through these flames. i offer mine to you. eat, and you will have it.

did he want to die? faced with this — vision, and faced with death, apollyon tried hard to consider.

black eyes, forked tongue, a snake looking up at him from the cold ground.

live.

Wolf smiled. your father returns to tell you that you must keep his blood alive.

the demon's gaze filled with fear, and then snapped with arrogant rage. don't presume to know what i want, no matter how many dreams you throw at me.

Wolf was silent.

don't you want to know?

no! go away! leave me here! if i have to die, i want to be alone!

the laughter was sibilant.

eat. dream your way through the fire, stupid boy.
