hunger of the flesh had molded against hunger of the mind, and now apollyon stood over the strips of meat once more.

the man's body trembled. Wolf watched with solemn interest.

you will die today if you do not eat.

a sob broke across the sweating face. that's — that's better than this.

death is better than strength? than power?

apollyon was silent, unable to take his eyes from the unchanged, unmoving pieces of flesh.

then lie down and die.

no answer, and then, weakly, you will tell me?

a nod. i will tell you.

with a choked cry, apollyon fell to devouring, and it seemed more meat sprang from the stone, good blood and rich fat, these tastes mingling in his mouth. it felt as though his belly had been empty for a thousand years, and no matter how much he ate, he was not satisfied.

until apollyon glanced up, and gasped a low moan in horror.

Wolf's pointed teeth glittered in a bloodstained skull. his bones hung with remnants of flesh and fur, the rest consumed as the demon had frantically chewed and swallowed and snapped for more.

the eyes were gone, only the deep yawn of two depressions where they had once stood.

now i will tell you, said Wolf, his voice garbled and horrible.

apollyon was suddenly surrounded by images, filled with flashes of sharp sensation.

he was an elk with proud antlers, feeding at the carcass of a wolf.

he was a caribou calf on migration, and he held a piece of wolf ivory in his mouth.

he was a doe, gutted and struggling; before apollyon's horrified eyes, he saw the skeletal vision of Wolf appear to her, offering her spirit a piece of himself.

do you see? one life. one breath.

apollyon wept, the taste of Wolf's blood heavy in his mouth.

now dream. the fire is passing. i give you my strength.

the bones clattered to the floor of the cave, and in the walking world, the wolf with black eyes awoke to the sound of his own screaming.
