Aleck

Creeping out of the sagebrush, Aleck stretched languidly in the spring sunlight.

He'd already gone through his morning routine: wake up, preen, get a good two or three breakfasts worth of insects in his system, and doing a few brief vocal warm-ups, preparing himself for a long, most likely unsuccessful, season of chasing after Miss Right. Obviously, the failure of last year was due to being too much male for any prospective partner to handle. And since he hadn't exactly dialed back on machismo, he expected another splendid failure this year.

But, going away from Aleck's need to raise a brood, there was the question of his need to do mischief. It had been a restless few days, and his neighbors were beginning to bore him. Thus, he decided: he would go forth into the Kintla Flatlands and meddle, goad, and prod to his heart's content, in the spirit of exploration, adventure, and boredom.

Stretching his wings and lifting off, Aleck flitted off with a contented warble, looking for trouble and sorely disappointed if he didn't find it.
