Most of this post is useless fluff and narrative, lol.

Quetzalcoatl's orders had been clear, her command ringing like tempered whispers through his torn ears, as if the Amazon Queen were walking beside him though she had returned to Coatl's Rise. If she'd found what she had came to these lands, so far from her kingdom, he hadn't asked. There had been fire in her eyes as she spoke to him. The Reigning and War Queen was not an adversary that anyone wanted, for she might have came off as posh and genteel queen, the love she held for her women subordinates was easy to underestimate. Five, still, did not quite understand what she required of him, knowing only that it meant it would require he be away from Coatl's Rise for an undisclosed amount of time — perhaps for the rest of his life. Her words had been cryptic. Freedom was something beyond Five's understanding. He'd known it once, a very long time ago; but he didn't want it. He only wanted to serve her, to train the new Gladiators that would come to them in time. Five had kept the name Nero — his name — close to his heart, a highly coveted secret for all these years and now that it had been presented to him on a silver platter he didn't want it. Quetzalcoatl had spoken that he would need it in these savage lands, lands where her son ...their son called his new home. Tezcacoatl had not been kept a secret from him, and as it was his fight for the Queen's favor producing children was the goal. His interaction with him had been minimal as Quetzalcoatl kept the boy close to her bosom, training him to be an Amazon Prince. Born of royalty and a slave, there had been curiosity within Five as he pondered what the child looked like now, if his math was right no longer a child but a man.

Prince Tezcacoatl had always been a mini-me to his mother, likely the singular thing that cemented the Amazon Queen's affection for him. Five wondered if the boy had looked like him if she would have sent the child away with a surrogate mother to be raised as a Gladiator as Tezcacoatl should have been. It was too little too late to ponder such things and if she had more children by him Five had to face the reality that he might never know. The Amazon Queen had just came into her season when their paths crossed, exactly where she'd told him to wait for her; and he already had her favor though she had not sought a partner for two years, secluding herself away during her cycle. Parting from her side was hard, harder than it should have been Five knew. There were many young, green boys that would have jumped at the chance to be allowed outside of the Rise; but unlike them Five's loyalty would not leave the Amazon's. He would integrate himself into these savage lands, seek a pack and be the watchful sentry over the women the Queen planned to send to the Wilds. Manauia, the Huntress still stood beside the Prince, but he needed his garrison. A new garrison to replace the one that had never came back to report in.

Five's plans did not exactly take advantage of his newly founded and highly unwanted freedom, but it was not where he wanted to be. His heart ached from the Amazon Queen, but he would not disobey her. He paused at the bank of the river he'd been following, lowered his head and lapped at the cool, fresh water with vigor. He had a job to do, and as he did in the arena he intended to prove his worth, that her trust was not misplaced with him.
