Profile of Grimeye: Quick Facts
Grimeye
Played By: Bryndel
Basic Info
Full Name: Grandma Shiveyes "Grimeye" Bandersnatch
Subspecies: Coywolf
Sex: Female
Age: 6 years (Spring 2012)
Birthplace: Outside the Teekons
At a Glance
A wiry, bony frame softened only somewhat by fur. Her whiskers bear the snowy shine of age, but her single eye gleams with sharp intelligence still. Her fur is a fairly typical sabled pattern of brown and tan, with some fading grey which age has increased the relative proportion of along her flanks. Her knuckles are especially gnarled and bony, to the point that they sometimes look outright deformed.
Profile of Grimeye: Details
Appearance
Withered by age to an even more bony build than most coyotes, her remaining eye (the left) nonetheless still possesses a shrewd fiery yellow gleam. Her poses and movements are stiff, but it is apparent to most observers that this creature possesses bountiful reserves of tenacity, in particular. Her mottled sable brown and tan fur has some patches of gray intermixed, and a touch of silvery-white most notably around her whiskers.

Her feet have visibly suffered her years' ravages particularly badly, and are knobbly, gnarled things that, depending on the angle, day, and other factors, may hardly even resemble paws any longer. This can be especially misleading given her tendency to limp occasionally. Though her muscles have wasted and dwindled somewhat she does still have a wiry strength to her, but mainly she is thought by most who meet her to simply be too cussedly stubborn to die, something her oft-disagreeable expression and deliberate contrariness do little to dispel.
Personality
She has an acid wit and sharp tongue, which are increasingly the weapons she relies on in place of her blunting yellow teeth and slowing reflexes as the years catch up with her. She does have a soft spot of sorts for her own family members, and is fonder of coyotes than of wolves, but whether this shows up in any given conversation is anyone's guess. What prey sustains her she tends to catch through clever tricks as much as anything else, these days, though she is also not above sharing or even scavenging when necessary.

She is generally quite direct and critical, but also tries to give praise when she thinks it is genuinely due, to those she cares about at least. She is savagely protective of the places and creatures she gets attached to, but these consist mostly of those marked by her own blood.

Whilst she is half or more wolf herself, and nearly all her family also of mixed blood, she prefers to...conveniently ignore this little fact, often as not.
Biography
She automatically bears a suspicious dislike of wolves, whom she blames for the death of her mate and firstborn both.

Few now remember her original name; her commoner nickname of "Grimeye" came about around the same time as the loss of her mate when her right eyeball was also taken by an assailant. Many younger coyotes and coywolves, not necessarily blood-related to her, have also frequently called her "Grandma."
Relations
Part of the Bandersnatch Clan, several of whom have recently relocated to the Teekons.

I want to give a nod to the amazing webcomic Digger by Ursula Vernon, its character Boneclaw Mother in particular who helped inspire my Grimeye! ("Grim Eyes," less so, ironically. ;P ) I highly recommend giving it a read if you haven't already. :D

Stuffing just a few selected quotes here for now, at least while I'm still developing this char...
"Do you swear loyalty to the tribe, to defend your sisters and keep them strong, to share food and shelter so long as you live among us, bearing in mind that you probably aren't going to live among us, so the issue isn't likely to come up?" ("... This has got to be our most half-assed ritual yet...") (p403)

"Now, I do not quite believe that you have nothing to hide. I smell secrets on you, little mother, and some of them are familiar. ...There are people you are protecting. Even so, I smell no malice on you. A shame, really. Malice might help to cushion you from things to come."

"Because—I quote—'I may be old, but if you think I can't still rip you up one side and down the other, cub, even if I am five times your age...'" "Can she actually do that?" "Doesn't matter. That's one of those fights where if you lose, you're humiliated, and if you win you've beaten up a blind elder who can hardly walk, which is arguably worse. She's good at using her weakness as a bludgeon." (p501)

"I fear you have the advantage of me, madam." "I am Boneclaw Mother. I am eldest. I speak for the tribe." "Then I am honored to meet you." "Yes. You are."

"It doesn't matter, Stone-in-the-Ear. Boneclaw Mother's already decided—the rest of us may as well acquiesce with a little dignity." ("And that's why you're the one who's going to take over when I die, Shadebones." "I'm really not holding my breath.")

"What's with the rat?" "She's overcome with emotion." "It doesn't look emotional. It looks about ready to puke." "That's how earth rats show emotion." (p412)

"You sure? Shadebones here has this one nephew, and Hare's Ghost, if I were thirty years younger..." "You're blind. You can't even see him." "He smells adorable." "You're a vile old woman." ("When you get to be my age, you'll learn the value of a rich fantasy life." "And here I thought it was just encroaching senility..." "I am not senile. I just talk to myself because the rest of you don't provide adequate conversation.")

"Get out of my sight. Even your sins are petty."

"Your hearing is, as always, impeccable madam—even if your sense of decorum is not." "... Oh come on. All of those endless questions and responses and the burnt offerings and the blood mingling and that stupid thing with the cactus spines—and for what? To make life harder for this creature who's doing something we ought to be begging her to do anyway." (p400)

"Daughter, given what you had to work with, I think that you probably did the best that could be done. There was a great deal of fate involved here, and you cannot defeat fate with scaffolding. ...And I never let anybody use fate as an excuse for incompetence, so take what comfort you can." (p750)

"Bloodtail's spent most of the night finding her courage at the bottom of a bottle, and I want you out of here before she tries anything cute." "Cute?" "You know, single combat, that sort of thing. Cute." (p421)

"Hare's Fangs, Boneclaw, it's not even dawn yet..." "When you're blind, daylight's only good for sunburns."

"I'm sorry your...er...motherness, but I really try not to have much truck with gods." "Heh heh heh. Don't we all? Only the very wise or very foolish speak willingly with the divine."

"I know exactly what is at stake, Captain. You are trying to convince yourself that whatever cause you follow is worth that girl's death.
I know all about gods, Captain. I know that a god that demands a child's life is not a god worth saving. Choose." (p713)
