Appearance
A stocky, large-headed bird about the size of the American Robin. A double-peaked crest lends her a shaggy appearance. Like others of her kind, she's slightly larger than the average male and sports chestnut splotches across her belly that the other sex lacks. Her underbelly is white; the rest of her is coated in a slate-blue shade; racing stripes of black and white are visible in the junction between her chin and shoulders. She possesses a long, dagger-like beak perfect for her omnivorous, aquatic diet. At times, a sharp trill or a self-important rattle like that of the Hairy Woodpecker falls from this sharp beak.
Personality

She's a silent bird, save for vocalizations only her own kind can understand, but nevertheless an expressive bird who seems most excited when at the side of a tidepool. A mischievous trickster and a goofball - you'll find she's rather harmless and endearing if you don't attempt to eat her. She can be tentative or quiet around strangers but once accustomed to a certain individual, she's the life of the party.
Biography
She was born in a small burrow, about a foot long, to two parents. For a time, they were kept to this burrow, which was nestled in a sandy dune on an idyllic beach. Tula's first memories are the glimpses of blue she'd catch beyond the entrance and of the distant roar of the surf. Finally, when Tula and her other nestmates came of age they were allowed out of the burrow and released into the wild. Tula flitted off, feeling the spray of the sea on her wings for the first time and flew away from home.

In time, she found a small cove and took up a few small tidepools as her territory. At low tide she'd chase away others with her sharp beak and harsh rattling cry; once they'd gone the juvenile fisher would gorge on small fish, clams and mussels, edible anemones, seaweed, and anything edible she could scavenge from the pools. At high tide, the fisher would perch on the top of her favorite rock, which extended well above the waters below, to watch the waves roll in. Times were good and the young bird matured - she grew into her adult plumage and acquired more territories. She even hatched a brood, her first, but their burrow was built too close to the sea and their hatchlings were drowned in a storm.

Shortly before the fisher's first birthday she was attacked by a young coyote but managed to escape - granted, she was wounded. The flyer returned to her sandy beach, unable to completely withhold her soft trills of pain. Some time must have passed where she dozed fretfully for the next thing she knew she was being carried gently in the maw of a wolf! The bird panicked at first, certain her doom was near only for the wolf to rumble softly and continue on. Finally, her injuries would let her struggle no more and she could only cheep loudly in distress.

The wolf surprisingly did not eat her, it held her close under a paw and tended to her. When Kai fed the bird small chunks of fish, her trust was won. Since then, she'd always travelled with the dryad. Other familiars came in time, a small garter snake, Nanga, and a sea otter, Mohibe. In time, Nanga moved on in search of a mate.

After Kai's foster mother disappeared, the trio stayed in the cove for some time before striking out in search of adventure. They roamed for two phases of the moon until ambushed by a band of sea rogues and Kai was backed against the cliff. In an attempt to distract the pirates, Mohibe launched himself at them and lost his life in the process. Kai was forced to throw herself overboard and Tula could do little else but fly after her last friend.
