Profile of Naiad: Details
Appearance
A stocky she-wolf of average size (though significantly smaller than her brothers and father) who inherits her build from the pinch of northerner that her grandmother claims.

Toned with musculature on account of the permanent life of a rogue and wanderer, vaguely scarred - most noticeably a few bite marks cloister upon the thick ruff of her nape and a few shallow gashes linger upon the line of her spine - on account of an attempted rape in her past.

Her thick pelt is the work of her arctic blood though she is fawn in coloring rather than ivory. Much like Ceto, her face is masked though in a pale cappuccino shade, and she sports an underbelly and chest of the same hue. Faint white water-color spots dapple her spine in the form of markings, much like a fawn.

She sports slightly tufted ears and snaggleteeth in the form of fangs that extend beyond her lips - visible even when her mouth is closed - a trait inherited from a deceased grandfather.

Her eyes are a pale peach shade, much like coral.
Personality
A studious young woman who resrves thoughts and opinions alike until certain of her beliefs and course of action.

Reserved with strangers but an upholder of justice regardless and a self-proclaimed defender of the innocent and weak.

Intensely devoted to her family clan and any who find themselves within the fold, proud and protective much like her relatives. Wild as the rest of them though she holds her cards closely to her chest.

She is particularly close to Ceto, Ashray, and Sedna, though even more so with her adopted daughter, Graeae.

A botanist and lover of the sea, stars, and nature in general.
Biography
Her dam was Ashray, the sea witch. A wanderer, Ashray was the daughter of a nomadic she-wolf who had been raped in her travels. Despite her child's origins, Ceto begged admittance to a matriarchal group of women along the coast known as the tribe of Tahor and was admitted to the lower tiers. It was here that Ashray was raised.

The girl grew - loved by her mother, the lack of father gone unnoticed - spending her days assisting with the cove's gardens, gathering trinkets washed in by the sea, and enjoying childhood with the typical carefree happiness. As the girl blossomed into womanhood, she began learning to hunt the fauna of the cliffs and sea; eventually, these forays began to lead her beyond the safety of the maternal group's territory.

It was on one such hunting trip that their plan would be foiled by an inexperienced male. The small band of red deer fled, strategies falling apart as the herd scattered. The young man, who would later reveal himself to be called Phorcys, was taken hostage and led back to Tahor.

He would be tried for the crime and found guilty of disrupting their hunt - yet, pardoned on account of his foreigner status and ignorance. The male was placed amongst the lowest of ranks after choosing to stay and would be required to replace the stolen meat as restatution.

It seemed that few members of the female group were bothered by the young man's plight but Ashray found herself sympathazing with Phorcys. As a result, she took to seeking him out and befriending him. Beneath a composure of politeness and respect, she soon discovered that Phorcys was a thoughtful young man with a gentle humor that soon warmed her heart. After an initial period of awkwardness, the yearlings were inseparable.

Months passed and trouble brewed amongst the close-knit group. Tahor was comprised of women alone - some mothers with young children - that had banded together after the fall of a nearby pack. Other she-wolves had joined, seeking sanctuary to raise their children with the assistance of the other females around them but the unofficial group's leader was undoubtedly the matriarch, Melusine.

While the presence of Phorcys should have meant joy at having another able-bodied hunter, it seemed having a male in their midst was just too much for the women of Tahor. Tension thickened until at last it was put forth by Melusine that Phorcys leave for the sake of the pack.

Ashray, with Ceto in tow, followed after her lover.

The trio carved a niche for themselves in the south, in a forest clinging to the shoreline. Spring approached and Ashray grew heavy with Phorcy's children. As summer neared, she gave birth to a large litter of six though only five survived the first week of life.

With her mate and mother to aid her, Ashray began her first tenacious attempts with parenthood. The children seemed to reflect her efforts - happy and healthy if a bit wild.

As the pups grew, the only daughter proved to be a child that had taken after her mother.

Naiad was a reserved child, content to watch her rambunctious brothers in play though she had no desire to join in the typical rough-housing. She became a shadow of her father, trailing after his heels so long as he remained near the den - for the wilderness was frighteningly unknown.

She reserved her first word until she had mastered the spoken language enough to speak in sentences; other developments followed suit - Naiad waited until she had memorized her mother's graceful tracking and pounces to hunt. It seemed the girl child would spare nothing but full effort in every endeavor.

She grew into an equally poised young woman with a heart of gold that had been both inherited and nurtured into being by her family.

Slowly but surely, Naiad's brothers were drawn away from the peaceful shore for reasons each their own - to follow after a girl, to see the world, to follow after their brother. The family shrunk to four, and as Naiad took on adulthood responsibilities she began to assist her parents in patrols and hunts; they even begun teaching her to fight.

Despite their happiness, a dark threat would soon settle over the neighbouring lands with effects that would ripple over the tiny family.

A wildfire would sweep through the forests, destroying much of the life within. Though it did not quite reach the woodland near their coast, rogues from disbanded packs fled into the nearby territories seeking refuge.

The day everything fell apart began as any other. Naiad woke, broke her fast with her grandmother on dried berries and seabird, and set out to check on the gardens. The young woman did not consider asking anyone to accompany her, for she'd long grown used to tending the plants alone in the wee hours of the morning.

The nymph was about halfway through plucking up some weeds when she turned, feeling eyes roving along her skin. She knew only a moment of suspicious curiosity before the stranger burst from the woods, falling upon her slender form and burying fangs in the back of her neck.

Naiad froze, frightened beyond imagination, but it was the male's rough, desperate attempts to wrap his arms around her and mount that brought forth her screams.

Phorcys rained down upon the man, brought to his daughter's aid quickly by the panic in her voice, unrelenting as Ashray loped onto the scene. The witch gathered up her distraught daughter, passing her along to Ceto, before jumping to her husband's defense.

It seemed snarls and snaps would echo from the timber for eternity as Naiad reassured the fussing grandmother hen flitting about while she waited for her parents to emerge. Her mother was bleeding from a rather torn ear but the two appeared to be uninjured for the most part.

Naiad tended to Ashray, agreeing to stay close to home until they could be certain the nomad had gone.

Naiad was awakened in the dark of night to the sound of far off howls only hours later, shaking Phorcy's awake. The father herded the three females in his care beyond the den, urging them north to wait for him.

They lay in wait near the mountain pass that would them through the treacherous range to the south, where they could find somewhere safe to rebuild. Naiad was brought to her feet as Phorcys arrived, severely injured and carrying a dark shape in his mouth.

Naiad could only watch as her father placed the crimson-crusted, decapitated head at her feet - as custom dictated. He'd been watching the densite for some days, Phorcys revealed, Naiad having caught his eye. Once an opportunity presented itself, he'd attempted to claim her.

They left the shores of her childhood behind, knowing that more comrades might be forthcoming and the sea was no longer safe.

On their way south, the family was greatly surprised to run across Condatis returning home, though not alone. A young woman, Sedna, lingered some distance behind him, the fresh mark on her neck a symbol of her new status as his wife.

He joined their travelling band and Naiad was overjoyed to have a new sister though the woman was rather shy and submissive. In time it was revealed that she had been a thrall to her previous pack, rescued from a lifetime of injustice and abuse at the hands of her uppers by Naiad's brother. As spring neared, Ashray welcomed her second litter only two weeks before her first grandchildren came into the world.

With two litters to care for, they were forced to stop for a time and take up temporary residence of a secure valley. Naiad was too caught up in the sudden responsibilities of being an older sister and an aunt, too burdened by the needs of her family to linger long over the instance with the strange male. She was a resilient woman and she need only look at her father and brothers to know there were good men in the world.

On a brief solitary excursion, the nymph came across another small band of nomads. She had learned to keep her distance from strangers, and watched the rogues from a safe ways away. They appeared to be strange wolves - preoccupied with the skies to which their religion extended to. Curiously, Naiad took to observing them in her downtime finding that the sect expressed radical beliefs akin to a cult.

She grew more disgusted with the beings, called to action when the fanatics began preparing for a ceremony in which a child would be sacrificed to appease the heavens.

As the members of the faith slumbered, Naiad crept amongst them and gathered the recently born child in her jaws - fleeing on swift paws before any could awaken to discover their sacrifice stolen.

As expected, Naiad faced an onslaught of anger and disbelief when she returned to her family. Naiad's head remained bowed, gaze on the mewling pup she sheltered between small paws.

It was when Phorcys stepped forward, intending to return the child, that Naiad's voice escaped in a quiet hush that belied the rage brewing in her tones. After explaining where she'd found the child and stating that she would not leave the girl to die, Naiad took her newly adopted daughter gently in her maw and left her dumbfounded family to lift their jaws from the ground.

With the sunrise, the clan continued their journey south - fearing retaliation. Naiad adjusted to the pup's needs and after several days, began to lactate though only enough for the runty bairn. The girl was dubbed Graeae and became a member of the family.

Their journeys would lead them onward, though they would eventually turn east and unwittingly head for Teekon.

Family Traditions:
- The surname Marinus is not passed via fathers or marriage. Any wolf taken into the seafaring clan adopts the name which was chosen by Ceto, Ashray, and Phorcys shortly after the latter two wed.

- Blood for blood: Attacks on an relative require the brunt force of the clan to retaliate. In the event that another attempts to murder and/or assault any member of the clan, custom dictates that their family tear that person apart and present them with the head of their attacker.

- Marking: Upon marrying, Marinus's mark each other with a bite mark to the side of the throat - any true relative of the family can distinguish between the scars.

- The Marinus clan follows no particular religion or creed but have adopted flexible laws of their own to be implented as fits the scenario. Additionally, they hold great respect for the oceans and reside near them always. As such they are adroit and graceful within the waves, seemingly more at home in water than on land.
