Lightsun was born in a litter of two, a male pup the only other born alive. They were born into a harsh year, with barely enough food to go around the pack of ten wolves. Her parents were not the alphas, and there was no room for their pups. They knew this, and kept Lightsun and her brother hidden away from the pack. It was a difficult time, and their mother often had to steal away from the group to feed and care for them. She was stressed and tired, but her motherly instincts compelled her to keep her offspring alive.
    Eventually, the members of the pack learned of the pups, and Lightsun’s mother knew that if they were discovered, the alphas would kill her offspring. Rather than they die at the teeth of strangers, and unable to keep them hidden or fed any longer, she decided she would kill them herself, for there was nothing else she could do for them. However, before she was able to perform the painful deed, she was shot by a hunter and killed. The hunter and his partner found the two pups cowering close to her body, and seeing a money-making opportunity, grabbed them and took them home.
    Darkmoon and his sister were sold to separate homes, and that was the last she saw of him. Lightsun was sold to a couple who mistook her for a husky, and took her home. They had dreams of starting up their own sledding team and moved north to cooler climates, but they knew little about dogs and less about mushing. They acquired some additional puppies during their move, and quickly set up home in an urban backyard at the edge of a town.
    It was not long before it became evident that Lightsun was different to their other dogs. She was more wild, more difficult to train and had a habit of escaping from their property. Often she would be found patrolling the nearby town, rummaging through bins and terrorising the neighbourhood's animals. They tried building higher fences and constructing an enclosed run, but nothing could contain her and the enclosed yard was stifling. They resorted to tying her up with a long cord, but this only made her more frustrated. Struggling fiercely against its hold one day she cut her face with the rope, leaving a scar, but in the same effort managed to snap the cord and was free again. Upon escaping the yard, a car backfired on the street and, in her terror, she ran headlong into the forest and away from the town, never to return.
