Little is known about the Vael line prior to their part in the great migration of many families from west to east. In much of the Casco Bay region of Maine where this great journey ended generations ago, the name Vael is synonymous with the Keil family. In modern times, this is not so much an inaccuracy as an oversimplification: every modern Vael carries Keil blood, while the Keil line itself has all but disappeared, as the Vael line once did generations ago.
The reappearance of the Vael line began as a reclamation — an intentional departure from the reputation of the Keil name by the descendants of the much-hated Arnlith at Sunfil Grove. As of 2024, there are only a few wolves alive who once bore the name Keil. Since their reclamation of the defunct family name, the Vaels have developed a unique reputation of their own.
The wolves of Casco Bay eventually came to know Sunfil Grove as a sanctuary. For several generations it served as a haven of sorts for the troubled descendants of the Vael lineage, offering shelter to passing travelers and those in need. It was the leadership of Lanawyn Vael which eventually made Sunfil Grove a truly noteworthy place. With her ascension, the pack began to engage in trade with the nearby Cyaneans and other passing groups. For two years the pack existed in relative peace and prosperity, welcoming both distant cousins and new blood into their ranks.
During this time Lanawyn herself took a wife and brought forth two litters of children. Her second litter was barely weaned when Sunfil Grove was taken by force. Atlas and Morticia Medeiros, distant relatives of the Vael lineage, brought an army to the sanctuary's doorstep. The Vaels, suffering heavy losses, abandoned their beloved valley forest. Lanawyn led the survivors to their allies, the Cyaneans, where they recovered for a time. In December of 2023, the Vaels claimed Witch Island and formed an official alliance with the Cyanean Empire.
