His mother, Akela, did her best but it became obvious in the first few weeks of his life that the wolfdog had been born deaf. At a loss of what to do for her son, they communicated solely through body language and as such, the silent boy never learned how to talk and was branded a mute as well.

In his second year of life, his owner was discovered and outed for owning a wolfdog -- resulting in his having to pay a fine and Holokai being shipped back to the states. His owner tried to arrange for Holo to fall into the right hands and even though his new handler paid a hefty rehoming fee, it wasn't enough to insure that the island wolf went to a good home.

He wound up in the dogfighting rings, a brutal world of constant battling and bloodshed. He was made to do horrible things here and had horrible things done to him in turn. One day, a shooting broke out amongst the spectators and in the chaos, several dogs escaped -- Holo amongst them. The fighters soon split up and scattered in different directions.

Holokai wanders alone now, scarred and traumatized -- refusing to speak of what happened to him in the rings, even if he could talk.

Washes ashore on Wheeling Gull Isle and is intercepted by Aiolos, leader of Yuelong -- who accepts him into the pack and renames him Drifter.
