in a cozy den within the freezing siqinniqtillugu, life is being brought into the world. the union between a water-diver woman, a sealhunter, and a snow-pelt man, an oxhunter, has delivered the fruits of four tiny, writhing and squealing pups, fighting for their place within this new, unfamiliar world. their den is claustrophobic, built beneath the crevice of a large, round boulder. the air is cold, stinging, the december months harsh to such small whelps. and yet, their mothers warm milk is all they need. small and mewling.
they are soon out of the den, exposed to the harsh weathers and the snows of the umingmak pijjutingit. sunset plains is where they remained for the first three months of their lives. for two months afterwards, they are nomadic, travelling wherever the wind dares to take them ; they are tasked to grow familiar to their lands and being tested by blizzards and storms. many pups do not make it, though qanniujait, named 'Snowflake' for her small, white body, is lucky to keep her life, as well as the lives of her littermates.
at six months old, they travel to the kigutittiaringniq, where snow-pelt children must learnt to navigate the cliffs and the crags, an elegant dance between life and death. they follow the mountain goats to the springs and the partial clearings, and come eight months, they descend the mountain to the aqqutingit, following muskox and caribou. it is here that they watch the bigger hunts, daring to take quick bites. learning.
the lands are treacherous, but the pack is happy.

born a few days after their first birthday, qanniujait's mother and father, nattirasuaqti and piqsirniq respectively, bring forth a new litter. within it, there are another four children, and so they cycle of growing, travelling, learning repeats. at 20 months, or 1.7 years, mother tira takes them to seal island, her homeland, where they prove themselves as adults after their first seal hunt. adopting the name nanuralaaq, cub of polar bear, what once was a feeble snowflake was now named for her strength, although still, teased for her height compared to the rest of her family - a trait she had been given by her father, the small, snow-pelt man.
at two and a half years, her father grew sickly. with a condition that worsened night after night, he did not wish to inflict his illness upon neither his young children, nor those that had grown, nor his packmates. so, in the night, he travelled to ukiaksaaq, a mountain, dark and tall, and leapt off of it. returning from the ocean, from which each of them were born. mother and children wept over his body, broken, hardly him, when it had washed upon qirniqtaq siuraq. dragging him back to auttuunmi, a proper burial was given ; a beautiful ceremony of life, of all the things that the snow-pelt chieftain had delivered upon his people.
her mother was never quite as bright. her brother, pamiuqtuuq, assumed the role of chieftain, along with his wife, ullaakut, as chieftess. as of december, 2024, their three children, kajuit, tuktuk, and sira are nine months old, with the former two being boys, and the latter being a girl.
after the death of her father, nanuralaaq, deemed 'rala', was titled forthbringer, and betrothed to a crow-feather man by the name of pittiulaaq, named for a bird that roosted upon their cliffs. whilst she tried to find something within the man, she was ultimately unimpressed by his lackluster prowess and his scrawny figure. abandoning the title of forthbringer, and the duty with building an alliance of blood and whelps, the role then fell upon her younger brother, tuugaalik, who has since married the younger sister of pittiulaaq, akpaliarjuk.
and, although she had rejected the man she was meant to marry, rala still wished to have children of her own ; away from this place, cold, harsh, littered with death. so, going to her mother, whom sobbed, wept, when her daughter explained why she wanted to leave, tira reluctantly allowed the snowwoman to depart, sending her off with the tears of a mother who has had her heart split. her departure was met with feasting, a final send-off that was accompanied with dancing and stories, gifts to strengthen her, herbs for her to carry with her - to smell whenever she felt homesick, which, in truth, was both all the time and never at all. a heart conflicted.
