born to the tashēn and raised beneath the wide sweep of the great basin sky, coväh grew up in a world of open plains, red earth, and long migrations. his band followed the pronghorn along the foothills in summer and traveled toward the colder ridges in winter. most pups found guidance in their band chief, but coväh learned early that leadership could carry a heavy hand. the chief who ruled the tashēn was his uncle on his father’s side, a hard and unforgiving man who believed fear created loyalty. coväh father rarely stayed, drifting from season to season like dust on the wind, leaving coväh to navigate a childhood shaped by silence, bruises, and the constant need to stay small.
as the tashēn moved between grazing grounds, coväh became skilled at slipping through tall grass and reading the moods of both wolves and land. the plains taught him endurance, but his uncle taught him caution. where others learned songs and stories, coväh learned escape routes. when disputes with neighboring bands grew and resources thinned, his uncle tightened control over his people, pushing them toward conflict. coväh felt the world narrowing and knew that staying meant losing himself entirely.
