Akantha was raised as any young Siren would within the Nereides. She spent many long hours with the Siren Queen and often sat in with the High Priestesses until she was of age. Her earliest memories are filled with information: stories, tales, rituals, rights, and culture. She was always passionately dedicated and ambitious so it was not an arduous process for her to ascend from Neophyte to Initiate. At two years of age, they granted her the title of Adept.

Shortly after Aktaiê, Psamathe and Greyjoy’s departure from Themiscrya Coast, Akantha grew restless and irritable. She desired to prove her worth and prowess to the world beyond, but had initially declined the offer to join the newly founded branch in their quest. Her yearnings became too great to withhold and, after a blessing from her mother and the Matriarch, quickly set off in pursuit of the group with her half-sister, Leukothea, and her appointed Consort, Atlas, in tow.

A few weeks after the founding of Ankyra Sound Akantha, struck with a powerful feeling of concern, returned to the Coast to assuage her fears. There is no information on what happened to her in the interim as there are raw gaps in her memory, and she returned emaciated and struggled with memory retention. She discovered that most of her sisters had vanished, and Caiaphais had taken over the Sound. She stayed only a few short weeks to recoup before returning, finally, to Themiscrya. 

Though initially shamed, heartbroken, and struggling to recover from her ordeal, Akantha has regained much of her vigor and is bolder than ever before. She followed Meteora when she departed Themiscrya, determined to right her previous wrongs. But following a month long cold snap that left their Consort, Astraios, dead and a few others missing, Akantha challenged Meteora who rescinded the title of Matriarch to Akantha. She led the remnants of their party north where they picked up a couple stragglers and settled on the Blackwater Isles. But their activities gained the attention of Drageda, and now Akantha bides her time until the Commander will treat with her so they might broker peace between the two packs. 

Her leadership was effective, and she maintained order while still recruiting a healthy band of adults (both of Themiscrya and not) to her cause. On March 6th, 2017, Akantha officiated their claim with a howl. She remained a steadfast and committed leader until her sudden disappearance around the first week of May. 

Tokitae, one of the three siblings from Themiscrya she’d invited into her fold, took advantage of her solitary habits and hatched a desperate plan to keep her runaway brother safe. Believing Akantha to be yet another pawn of Themiscrya‘s High Council, Tokitae saw her as a threat to Chelan and her family. Tokitae ambushed the Matriarch while she was walking near the cliffs on the north side of the island and, after a brief struggle, was pushed over the precipice. Tokitae fled, and the Nereides, believing Akantha had been summoned to the Sea, disbanded. 

But the Sea was not yet ready to receive the amazon’s spirit. So She carried the woman who floated adrift on her currents and deposited her on the sands a few miles north of Drageda‘s northern border. Akantha dazed, and nursing a serious concussion, a twisted leg, a hairline fracture in her left shoulder blade, and other scrapes and bruises decided to hunker down and rest up while she formulated a plan. Because summer was just around the corner, she managed to scrape by through carcasses washed up by the sea or the smaller creatures that made their homes in the tide pools. It was enough to sustain her, but not enough to maintain her formerly impressive bulk.

Throughout her recovery, she sought solace with the Mothers and often conferred with them on the warm summer evenings. She learned more about her place in the world and decided, for good or ill, that she would no longer follow the destiny Themiscrya expected of her. Rather, she would forge her own path with the blessings of the Mothers.
