The conversation drew to its natural conclusion. Reluctantly, Cambria readied to begin the trek back to the rise. As he shifted his feet, he suddenly noticed all the bits and bobs still sticking to his fur from earlier. He looked down at himself with a little laugh, blushing faintly as he stepped back from Etienne to give himself a good shake.
Afterward, he inched back toward his new friend, an earnest look on his pale features as he said,
It was lovely meeting you, Etienne. I hope you feel a little better than you did before.Cambria hesitated, then reached out to brush his paw over the man’s shoulder again.
Until we meet again.
As he slid his foot away, he flirted his toes past one of the feathers wound in Etienne’s ruff. He smiled fleetingly, then drew back and began to turn. His mismatched eyes lingered on the other wolf’s face until he had no choice but to face forward. The connection severed, though he was left with the perfect imprint of Etienne’s face in his mind’s eye as he smiled his way home.
