The caribou man watched - again he saw something in her that she herself could not find if she were to plunge into the depths of her own mind. Perhaps a past he hid, perhaps a future she was yet to reach.
She steered her mind back to the moment. Still, blood trickled from some wound; still, pain cut into her flesh with a sharpness she had not known for too long; still, exhaustion dragged her muscles to the ground. But spite kept her standing, as did a strange pride.
Good,she responded, chest still heaving as her breath steadied. Then, with a sincerity she rarely showed so openly, she quietly added,
