RE: princes who adore you - Treepie - October 27, 2025

His response shouldn’t have made her heart thump faster, but it did. It shouldn’t matter to her that Kindle’s eyes were still wandering, but it did. For the first time since it had occurred to her to pair up with Alaric, Treepie felt potential. And it was such a breathtaking feeling.

But the instant Kindle demanded to know more about Alaric, Pie felt herself become immediately taciturn. It wasn’t that she wanted to keep this information from Kindle, it just wasn’t hers to give. And he didn’t want to just know who, he also wanted to know why not. It was distracting to wonder why he wanted this information as well.

That’s a story for another day, I think, she said lightly, offering an apologetic smile. Would you like to continue tracking? Or would you like to make our way down and try again some other time? Pie paused to consider before adding, I would be happy to meet up again whenever you wish.

Would she like to prove that she was a good huntress? Of course. Any wolf would. Treepie bit back her smile, lightly shaking her head at herself.

He was almost glad when she demurred; he needed more time to think about what he was meant to say, if she questioned him again about his intentions. He was confused now about what he was meant to be looking for — and no matter how much he would've liked to keep flirting and see where that went, he knew he had to tread more carefully with his packmates.

Regardless of spark or attraction or anything else, he knew he would have to live with these wolves. Hopefully for many years to come.

"Why don't you show me the best path down," he replied, wanting to get her away from the steeper slopes. Perhaps it would be easier for her in the daylight, just as she'd tried to tell him from the start. "Between you and me, I'm more worried about going down than getting up."

Yes, of course, Tiuttuk replied, rising to her feet. One day, you’ll be as surefooted as the sheep and goats, she assured him, brushing past Kindle and nudging him with an elbow as she proceeded toward the path that cut the mountainside. She paused to look over her shoulder. And me.

With nary another word, she dashed down the slope, dropping several dozen feet a matter of seconds with a few deft swerves. It was quite the rush. It was tempting to continue on like that, though she paused to catch her breath and look upward. All jokes aside, she didn’t want to leave Kindle behind or hanging.

Quietly hoping her stunt might have impressed him—and unaware that it might have dispelled him of any notions about acrophobia—Pie actually hopped upward again to guide Kindle back to the much more suitable path they’d used to get up here. It wound down the mountain’s face in a series of gradual switchbacks, which he may or may not have noticed during their ascent.

Good thing it’s wide enough for two, she thought aloud as she waited for Kindle to draw abreast of her. Anyway, you’re not wrong about going down vs going up. I’ve always thought the former was more treacherous too. Pie tossed him a sideways smile, then faced forward. Especially in the dark. Let me move ahead a bit. Step where I step.

Thus she led him first one way, then the other, as they navigated the descent, the moonlight palely lighting the way. By the time the ground began to even out underfoot, Treepie could fill her lungs again, though her muscles ticked and twitched. She raised an inky forepaw to tuck a yawn behind it.

Mature Content Warning

The participants have indicated the following reason(s) for this warning: wolves have bodies, bodies do things vaguely and separately
For a moment, Kindle was shocked into believing that Treepie had tripped and fallen. But the she kept falling, and quite gracefully at that, and he realized she was only hopping nimbly down the treacherous path they'd just ascended. Not, of course, before a horrified yelp had escaped him.

She pranced back up to him while his heart was still pounding, and he was angry — he could have sworn he was angry — about the trick and the scare, but he couldn't seem to wipe the grin off his face.

"Show-off," he accused, but he couldn't seem to mean it. He decided then and there that he'd just have to show her up one of these days. So he paid careful attention to what she was doing, watching where she placed her paws and how she shifted her weight —

That was when he saw it.

Them.

Kindle froze in place just as Treepie began to speak, all thoughts drowned out by white noise as he processed and processed and failed to process what was swinging right in front of his face. While the eternal buffering wheel spun above his head, begging for a reboot, Treepie turned back to him with a pretty smile.

And. It. Moved.

Not hers.

His.

Kindle hastened to catch up, pretending very hard for the both of them that he hadn't noticed a thing. But he was quiet on the hike back down. And he was bashful now in a way he hadn't been at the top of that mountain.

"Thanks," he said at the bottom, seeing her yawn and jumping on the excuse. "I'll let you get some rest. I'll be practicing for next time."

Anytime, Pie said, wondering if and when he would take her up on her offer to rendezvous again. Good night, Kindle.

She hesitated, as if she might say something else. But in the end, her lips pressed together and curled into a smile. She met his eyes one last time in the darkness, then slowly turned away. Pie was tired, though she imagined it might take a while for her to fall asleep tonight.
