stormchaser - Thyri - July 28, 2016

There was a roll of thunder from outside the den that drew the ears of the young pup forward atop her skull and brought her bright blue eyes to the entrance. She had been down for an evening nap, as her body was still young and the many hours of playful tousling with her siblings warranted frequent resting breaks. The loud noise had shaken her, though, and Thyri found herself feeling frightened of the prospect of what was outside that could make such a terrifying sound. Glancing to her family to verify that they all appeared safe, the girl lifted herself up on her paws and slowly, warily crept toward the entrance of their den. The dust outside was beginning to take on a different form as raindrops began to spat against it. Thyri looked to the earth with a curious tilt of her head and reached a single paw outward to test the ground. It did not seem as though it was dangerous.

Stepping outside of the entrance, the young dragon peered upward at the rolling clouds overhead. When there was a violent flash of light that streaked across the heavens, she yipped in surprise and tucked her tail tightly beneath her. Following the lightning was another deep boom of thunder and Thyri found herself overwhelmed by the sensations that it provided. Specks of rain continued to fall down onto her face, but she could not bring herself to break her contact with the sky.

Thunder tried to rock the earth, whilst the little boy slept. The first boom had not been so bad, rousing him for a moment before he'd forced his eyes back shut. The second, however, had him jumping up to his feet and spinning around, eyes wide in a desperate search for his mother's form. Having found her, his ears fell flat against his skull, mind creating various horrendous images of beasts that might match the sound coming from outside. Something was angry, a giant beast that he'd never seen before in his short life. Scrambling forward, he'd gone straight over to Gyda, having stopped just in time to keep himself from tumbling into her side. Another crack of thunder followed his actions, a flash of lightning providing him with enough of light to realize that someone was missing.

Hvitserk hadn't even noticed his sister as she'd gone through the den's mouth, attention having been glued to the need to take cover. When it had been realized that she was gone, however, he'd turned towards the exit. The beast outside was absolutely furious, and so he didn't want to go out, but was still pulled forward anyways. Every step was hesitant and stiff, fear raging on. Peeking outside, his curiosity had managed to dull his need to go into hiding, allowing for him to step out into the rain with his sister. Following her gaze, the child had been made to look up towards the sky, finding not a beast, but a display of foreign light. Had he the capability to speak more than just incomprehensible sounds, then surely he'd have asked her what was going on up there. But ask he could not, and so he'd instead been made to stare above, ears still back and body attempting to take shelter from the rain against Thyri.

Droplets fell from the sky and spattered against the girl’s head. Her blue eyes were wide as she gazed upward and willed the clouds to rumble once more, hoping to see the charge of light that would shoot across the heavens in a display unlike any that she had seen before. The gift of sight had given much to her and Thyri found herself wondering what else would come around in due time. The dragon whelp had learned in a very short time how to walk, babble, and see; she could only hope that there would be more to unfold in the days that were to come.

Without warning, the sky was illuminated in light once again and there was an echo of a roar that followed. The silver and brown spot leapt back a step and yipped out of a mixture of excitement and fear that had flooded her system. It was then that her brother found her. His body had brushed against her own very gently and the small girl turned her skull to meet his face. There was a loving glance there as Thyri moved to press her own body against his. Having Hvitserk there was all the comfort that she needed. The tufts of his fur were warm from the inside of the den. As the rain continued to drop down on the two pups, Thyri moved her skull toward him slowly in an attempt to press her wet little nose into his cheek.

Still being so young, his fur had yet to become a bit more resistant to the rain. It was with ease that the droplets had been able to sliver their way down to meet his skin, sending a few chills up and down his spine. He wanted more than anything to return to the den where it was both dry and warm, but seeing no movements from his sister prevented him from doing so. Some part of his mind knew that she couldn't just be left out there alone, and so without an adult to drag them back in, he was made to stay out there until she was done. In the meantime, Hvit could feel his body growing heavier and heavier, the water having since begun slicking down his coat. Yet, it was something that he couldn't even begin to understand, and so a whine of confusion had slipped past his lips. A quick conclusion had been made following that, believing that the rumbling beast was the one dragging him down. It would be a slow process, too, which made him wonder more about what had been done to anger the monster.

Feeling Thyri's body against his own offered some form of reassurance, but not enough for him to relax fully. The boy had glanced back towards the entrance, his gaze all but insisting that they return there. He was prepared to go back in and wake up anyone that he needed to, too, when a different type of cold was felt against his cheek. It was quickly revealed to be his sister's doings, and so he'd leaned back into her, all thoughts of returning inside temporarily abandoned. Turning to better face her, he'd then tried to bury his face into the crook of her neck, unconsciously looking to use her as a shield, still, against the rain.

There was a wild magic to the light in the sky and the rumble of thunder that sounded overhead. Though it was frightening for the young pup, she had found herself building her courage as the moments passed. It would not do them well to remain outside the den for long, with the nip in the air that promised rain, but Thyri was entranced by the sights before her and she was not ready to return to the darkness of their home. Still, the longer she witnessed the might of the storm, the more uneasy she could feel her brother growing.

He moved to press himself in the crook of her neck and she stiffened slightly, hoping that her tense muscles would allow him to understand that she would allow nothing to harm him. Her baby blue gaze darted to him for a fraction of a second and lightning illuminated the sky once more, sending a flash across her own features. If she wanted to keep him safe, she would return to their den and allow him to nestle close to their mother. With a quiet sigh, she nudged him toward the entrance to their den and provided a small curling of her lips into a smile. The cold was already biting at her paws as well.

Someday, perhaps he might find the lights that flashed across the sky to be interesting. Presently, however, he couldn't help but feel uneasy. He didn't know what caused the sky to light up as it had, nor could he feel comfort when a boom of thunder threatened to rattle the very ground that they stood upon. He'd sought protection from his sister, but even her silent promise to keep him safe hadn't been enough to calm him down. Hvit had wanted to stay with her, to watch over her, which is the reason for why he'd followed her out of the den. Yet, he'd quickly proven to be incapable of doing so, having deemed her as his guardian for the time being.

When he'd felt her nudging him, he'd pulled away just enough to meet her gaze. A smile filled out her features but, even still, some part of him felt bad for having put a stop to something that she'd seemed to enjoy. Alas, that hadn't kept him from responding to her prompting, and so swiftly had the child returned to the confines of the den. Only after he'd be able to see her lay back down would he follow suit, wanting to keep close to her as the storm continued outside. Until then, however, he'd stand and watch for her form, readying himself to move whenever she might.

At that age, Thyri did not believe her brother to be incapable of anything. He was born from the blood of the dragon, just as she was, and so he was destined for great things. Her mind was still young and she was incapable of understanding that her mentality would change as she aged. The crackling spirit inside of her would seek to find the storm as opposed to the comfort of her family. It was a sad truth, but she was far more feral and driven by her instincts than her emotions. With this, though, there was a fleeting moment of affection as she gazed on her sibling. A warmth struck her shimmering blue eyes and she was able to pull herself away from the looming storm clouds and rumbling thunder. There would be plenty of time to chase the skies, she thought to herself.

Shaking the drops of water from her coat, the young Goufa made a motion for them to head back into their den. She was certain to keep Hvitserk close to her side. The warmth of their home was calling to her, and she longed to nuzzle deep into the fur of Gyda and drift off into a peaceful sleep.

Wherever she would move, the young boy would follow. To her side, he would stick himself, watchful of her movements so that he might not miss out on a single thing. As was the same when she’d led him inside, his eyes never trailing away from her small form. Several times had he stopped to shake his coat free of any liquid, but quickly would he approach her directly afterwards. When she’d settled in for the night, Hvit had done so as well. Against his mother had the viking pressed his back, whilst his muzzle buried itself into his sister’s soft coat. There, with her, he’d easily found sleep and drifted off into the land of dreams.
