in limbs of oaken sovereignty - Mordecai - September 30, 2016

backdated to mid-september; open for anyone

Some day or two later, Mordecai found himself skirting beneath the towering reach of the mountains. The foothills were not the easily to traverse beneath them, but he was somewhat acquainted with the bend and curve of the land as it reached the river. Of course, what lied some odd few miles beyond the other side of that river would be the borderlands to the Keep, a pathway that would no doubt led him to his mate and presumably, the only child left in their union. It was here that he found himself stalling considerably, jolted back into reality by a grasp so firm that he felt supremely troubled. He had no idea what it was that he would say to Harlyn when he saw her, had no clue how to explain the events that had unfolded. Perhaps most importantly he had no idea how he would explain to her how he had lost their daughter at the hands of others; the thought of bringing her home any more pain wrenched his own heart.

At the river's edge he came to a pause in full, his solitary gaze searching the other side of that river as though he would find something there that would give him the answers to everything. Such a thing more than likely did not exist and so it was a fruitless search, but he could not bring himself to move forward or backward, or tear his gaze away from what would be the path to home. He hardly looked the part of a wolf that belonged to anywhere in particular now he imagined; the salt water had more than likely washed away the traces of where he belonged, and the travel had left him once more thin and weary.

A distant sound stole away his attention eventually; the only movement he made was the turn of an ear.
