Our faces blue - Prialux - October 17, 2016

Prialux spent more and more time outside than in the den. This was her safe zone, safe from Amara's nonchalance and safe from everything else in the world, as well. The rest of the territory was off limits, but soon, the cubs would begin to wander throughout the pack lands, and she would do so with all the gusto of Dora the Explorer. She was already showing signs of an insatiable desire to see new things, as evidenced by how readily she inspected everything around her.

Today it was a frosty leaf. The weather got mighty cold at night, and though she was mostly unaware of it due to the heat her small family generated, it left the leaves limned with a cold, bright whiteness that she took a keen interest in. She'd smelled it. She'd tasted it. She'd touched it, and stared at it, and chewed on it, and done just about everything else a toddler would do with an object of interest. There was almost nothing left to do with the frost on the leaves, but still she waddled over to every frost-lined leaf in her vicinity with wonder, uttering obnoxiously loud squeals of, "oooooh!" each time she found another one.

RE: Our faces blue - Harlyn - October 17, 2016

Larkspur.

Larkspur.

Larkspur.

Larkspur.

Harlyn awoke to find herself staring into her golden daughter's face. She blinked once, twice, gazing at eyes that were closed. Eyes that had been closed for days. Her emotions clenched tightly around her heart, but it was not a new grip. The claws had gripped her since the moment she saw her daughter crumpled upon the floor at the base of the foothills of Raven's Watch. They had never relaxed their grip, nor did Harlyn anticipate that they would. Not until her little girl opened those eyes and the heartbroken mother saw blue skies again.

It felt like years since she had last left the back corner of the Keep where she had laid her daughter. The druid strode forth like a zombie, stiff-legged and almost stumbling as she moved into the territory. She had no idea what drove her. She had yet to consider that her own life needed to go on even when Larkspur's was at a standstill. It must have been pure instinct that drove her. Or, she was acting as a puppet of the gods that she had once so fully, completely believed in. But they were dead to her, and she rejected the idea of being compelled by them so thoroughly that she would have rather died right then and there than have done anything theyactually willed of her.

Nevertheless, whatever drove her be it divine or natural, Harlyn found herself near the den of the only other mother she knew of within the confines of the Keep. She knew Amara to be hateful of her lot in life, and the druid had only ever looked on her with pity for that fact. At that moment, as her legs dragged her inexplicably towards the other woman's den, she felt nothing whatsoever. Only a dead weight in her chest held her down where her heart was supposed to be. Or maybe it was there still - she didn't think to wonder.

"What are you up to?" a voice echoed in her ears as she stopped, her eyes settled bleerily upon the young pup dancing excitedly through the forest. It took her a moment to realize that the voice was her own, saying the words aloud. Harlyn shut her eyes and shook her head, for the first time in days trying to regain her grip on the world around her. She didn't know why. She didn't care why. She wanted only to know what this little girl was doing that was making her so interested in the life that surrounded her.

"Ooooh!" Prialux complimented yet another leaf as she came to an abrupt halt in front of it. The frost lined the leaf's crinkled edges, and a finger extended into the center of the leaf via its veins. She drew so close that it nearly brushed the space between her eyes, which widened when the frost melted away from her breath, but she fell back when a wooden voice nearby drew her attention. It didn't frighten her, even though she hadn't noticed Harlyn at all until she spoke—this was the socialization period of her life, where nothing frightened her, except maybe pain and rejection. There were the days she learned what was good and what was bad, and she boldly faced them all.

She spun around to face the adult with her tail whipping happily. For a neglected little girl, Prialux was awfully happy most of the time. It had nothing to do with love and affection from her family, though. Prialux was so desperate for positive interactions that she was simply glad to see anyone that wasn't Amara or Kavos or Eros. Her brothers were too sullen, her mother too withdrawn. With them, she was lifeless, but for the promise of exploration. But with everyone else, she was as gleeful as could be, maybe even concerningly so. After all, one would not expect a puppy to be so damn glad to see a stranger.

"Hi!" she shrieked, having not truly understood Harlyn's question. She knew the words, but their meaning together in a sentence was completely lost on her. Prialux hopped in place, waiting for something else to be said, but before Harlyn could even manage another word, she blurted, "Pee-loo!" which, of course, was the closest she could come to saying her own name at this time. There were more appropriate things to ask, but she didn't understand the drawn look of exhaustion upon Harlyn. She thought this woman was here to pay attention to her and nothing more.

The girl made a noise of excitement that seemed to drag her further out of herself. Harlyn's head canted slightly as she watched the girl. She was so happy, and so innocent. The druid couldn't even figure what it was that was pleasing the child so. It didn't matter much. Her voice, the happy ringing of her words. She drew closer.

"Peeloo?" Harlyn repeated curiously, "I am not familiar with this activity." She slid down onto her stomach a few feet before the young wolf, watching her face intently. "Tell me more," she implored, knowing the pup likely had no idea what she was saying. She wanted to hear that voice again - that unbridled joy and excitement that had no cause to even exist given the circumstances of her life. It was as though Harlyn's eyes were closed and she couldn't make herself to open them. Prialux was the curtain being drawn, forcing her to wake up.

"Pee-loo, Pee-loo!" chirped the girl when Harlyn repeated her name back to her. She pranced in place with her thin tail swaying to and fro, and was none the wiser to what Harlyn had asked her. She was just so excited that someone was paying attention to her that her focus was all over the place. That was normal for her, though. She was but a babe still, and her attention span was shorter than most.

When Harlyn slid to her stomach, Prialux wasted no time in showing her how much she appreciated the attention. She knew nothing of boundaries, and went running right to the woman's chest. Her whole body wriggled submissively as she sought to lap at Harlyn's face, as she might have done her mother, but Amara never seemed to allow it. The hopeful light in her eye as she approached Harlyn was snuffed out whenever it was Amara she faced... but maybe her new friend would let her do it.
