Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 10, 2017 Wide paws more used to walking upon snow covered, frozen ground padded across the sand leaving blurred pawprints behind. He wasn't sure if he liked the way the sand stuck to the stiff fur between his toes, but that was almost forgotten as he looked out across the waves. The vastness of the ocean made him feel small-a feeling he wasn't used to-but he didn't mind it. The sound of the waves rushing in and breaking gently onto the sand was calming, as well as the tangy, wet scent of the sea. The day was on the cooler end of the spectrum for spring and Corranochender was thankful for it. His naturally thicker pelt was perfect for the depths of winter, but anything higher than 50 degrees usually left him panting. Granted, he did shed out some of his pelt during spring and summer, but not enough to leave him comfortable. Large head slung low on his shoulders, nose hovering above the ground, he took in the scent of wolves and fish and other ocean-y things. The scent of wolves was fairly strong, indicating that there must be a pack nearby. Padding over to a large piece of driftwood, Cor sat next to, fluffy tail curling around his big paws, and gazed out over the water. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 10, 2017 Thuringwethil feels far too cooped up in the last several days. Her headaches have gone away and her bloodshot eye has long healed itself, leaving only the pain in her chest from her ribcage. It is getting easier each day but a sigh too heavy or a pace too fast and she is wincing in pain, forcing herself to take a step back and reevaluate what she’s doing. It takes several reminders through the day to take it easy but she can’t set aside her responsibilities, even when the other wolves have taken a step up. Wildfire and Portia are both nearly about to pop and their paws will be fuller than they’d imagined. She finds herself further along the coast, beyond the cliffs. The time and distance had gotten away from her, making the journey in leisure so she doesn’t push her broken ribs more than they are capable of. The cool air keeps her comfortable and not overheated despite the extra effort but her attention is quickly broken. The silhouette of another has her attention by the time she’s long passed her borders. She doesn’t feel threatened in the presence of another but she finds herself curious in his purpose. It is apparent, even in their distance, that a claim is nearby, but she continues her pace closer and closer as her intrigue has the best of her. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 10, 2017 The longer the large, gray male sat there, taking in the sights and sounds of the sea, the more it started to grow on him. He had grown up on and at the foot of a mountain. The largest body of water he had encountered was the lake that was in his homeland. Even when he had dispersed from his home pack and became Alpha of his own, he was still in a landlocked area. Cor shook his head, dispelling thoughts of the past. The sea beeze fluttered against him like tiny fingers combing his gray pelt. Suddenly, he stiffened. The breeze had also brought the fresh scent of wolf! Still seated, he turned his head, scanning the beach for the other. Ah, there she was! A monumental female was slowly, but steadily approaching him. She was a sight to behold with impressive muscling rippling beneath her onyx coat. Not many measured up to Corranochender, but this female definitely did. He stood and faced her direction, ears cupped forward in friendliness and curiosity. He set his tail in a neutral position and wagged it slightly. "Greetings!" He called to the other. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 12, 2017 Thuringwethil watches the other wolf that seems to match her in size, but age shows in his face. Nonetheless, she knows her limitations going in and she tries not to make show of them as she smoothly comes to a stop, hiding the grimace that wants to form on her face. The male stands to greet her and her head lifts to its position of power, squaring over her shoulders, but her tail remains level with her body rather than its usual arch above her spine. He may appear friendly but she knows that doesn’t mean much of anything, especially a wolf close enough to her home. He calls to her and she dips her head once to acknowledge. Her slate eyes scan nearby and her nose fights through the salty air for a companion on the wind to him but she comes up just as emptyhanded as before. “Hello,” she responds after a moment, resettling her dark gaze upon his carved features. There is something familiar about him that she can’t put her paw on and she lets it linger in the back of her mind for an easy reach should something pop up to spark. She has been in the Teekon long enough that her memories of the north (mostly prior to her ascension day) are fewer and farther between. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 12, 2017 Shrewd amber eyes continued to watch her approach. It seemed to him that she was trying very hard to appear as if everything was okay, and she did a good job. Any other wolf wouldn't have noticed. Corranochender had been alpha long enough to be attuned to the slightest change in body language, in order to keep track of his wolves and their health. He unintentionally raised a brow in concern. He smiled slightly as the young female raised her head and assumed a dominant posture. There was no doubt that she was an alphess. He could smell the other wolves of her pack on her. She seemed young for an alpha, younger than he was when he had assumed the position anyway. He imagined her impressive size had something to do with it. He was confident in his abilities, but he wouldn't want to battle against her. Cor relaxed his posture and sat down again, to show her that he really wasn't any threat to her. "I am Corranochender, a newcomer to these lands." He paused and grinned self-deprecatingly before adding, "And a newcomer to the sea. I'd always heard about the vast expanse of water, but this is my first time experiencing it." RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 12, 2017 Even though the other produces no threat and introduces his himself quickly, Thuringwethil doesn’t allow any slack in her features. Her gaze remains hardened, scrutinizing, and considers his reasoning for coming all the way to the coast. She glances out to the sea as it rolls in, wave after wave, and then returns slowly back to him. “It is something to be seen and not described,” she tells him. There are not enough words in either of their languages to give the ocean a proper image; it often takes one’s own eyes to really understand. “I am Thuringwethil, commander of Drageda. It is further south, should you choose to go that way,” she says with warning tone to her voice. One brow quirks playfully—daringly—should he choose to continue on the path. “What is it you think she can give you?” RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 12, 2017 "Thuringwethil..." He said softly, tasting the name on his tongue. It flowed quite smoothly and he liked it. Cor noticed that she didn't relax for a moment and her face remained quite serious. He nodded as she spoke about the sea. The best it was explained to him once was just a really big, foul tasting lake with large creatures in it. The explaination was simplified and described the very basics of what the ocean was, but to see it with one's own eyes was definitly recommended. So this massy female was a commander, hmmm? He noted her tone when she spoke of the location of her pack, but he wasn't offended. She was their protector, so disclosing the location of the pack could be a double edged sword. Corranochender tilted his head slightly, thinking upon her question. He liked the look in her eyes when she asked the question, it was a nice break in her serious demeanor. How shall that question be answered? He wanted a home again, a family, a community. Cor shifted his weight, standing, then bowing into a playful stance-rump in the air and paws stretched out in front of him. He grinned cheekily. "I don't know, what can she give me?" He countered. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 14, 2017 The stranger doesn’t seem to be able to get comfortable as he constantly moves from sitting to standing and back again, then eventually lowering into a bow. Thuringwethil, during the whole time, barely moves an inch and nor is the reason outwardly obvious. Months of training on how to present oneself as Heda is enough to make the stiffness in her bones and the best way to stand to keep her ribs from hurting too much. Only when she takes a breath too large does she carefully release, hiding the pain in a slow exhale instead. Watching the other move in a way she knows she currently cannot makes her feel on edge but she doesn’t doubt she can at least get away if something is to turn sour. “That depends on what you need,” she says after a moment, “sometimes you don’t know until you’re here.” Through vague words, Thuringwethil knows the truth behind them. For months she denied her soul on the sea when she and her clan stayed on the dragon and her last visit before the move had been an eye opener. The words hadn’t been obvious but the feeling was there and she knew she should have followed her gut for the sleeping dragon woke and told her her purpose. Even if she doesn’t look back on their former home, she finds a small piece still vacant within her chest but the sea has managed to fill enough that she doesn’t need to worry about it. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 14, 2017 Amber eyes looked up at Thuringwethil from his bow, grin still on his face. She was still as stoic as when she first walked up. He wiggled his rump a few times, gray tail waving, trying to elicit a smile...or something. Feeling slightly defeated, he righted himself again and cleared his throat, grin fading from his lips. The rump wiggle usually worked! "Thuringwethil..." He spoke her name again. "Tell me of your pack?" He asked. "I must admit, I am looking for a community, a place to belong again..." All humor faded from his masculine features. His gaze turned inward to his memories, memories of his petite young mate and their son, both now deceased. He had done everything in his power to save his family and his pack...but it hadn't been enough. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 14, 2017 Thuringwethil blinks, slowly, as the playfulness dies away from the older male. He seems a little defeated in response and she fights the urge to pull the corner of her lips back, keeping her face void of any further emotion. If she can cause him to right himself once more, she can keep him that way. When he repeats her name, one ear twitches curiously. His seeming fondness for it causes her head to tilt just slightly to one side, only to correct a second later as he announces his purpose for staying so long. He isn’t upon her borders and she hasn’t offered an invitation, so her tails remain steadfast and away from the stranger. “We aren’t much different than any other,” she explains. At least, to their very core, they aren’t. They protect, serve, and prosper. “We have our own way of doing things and it is not uncommon that we are called savages. Of course, this land is not where we originate but from a place with harsher conditions than this.” Her slate eyes scan him over as she would have if he were standing opposite her scented border. She can tell he’s older but he’s still in one piece, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t of some value. However, taking another in—one that she isn’t sure she can trust—is another thing. It isn’t a Seageda or Trigeda wolf at her borders, one she knows she has their loyalty. “Your loyalty becomes your life if you find a home with us.” RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Corranochender - March 15, 2017 He nods as she speaks, curious to know why others may call her pack savage. The way of the wolf was savage at times, but describing a pack that way? He tucked the comment into the back of his mind to think on later. As the swarthy female's eyes roam over him, assessing, he raises his head slightly. He had nothing to be ashamed of. True, he was older, but not aged or elderly. He was fit, his massive body still all hard muscle and strength. Cor was probably more dangerous now, then he had even been when we was younger. Not only had had he mass and strength, but he had the knowledge and wisdom of how to use it. No pack or leader would find him wanting. Ah loyalty. Loyalty was a given. Loyalty was the core of the pack, without it the pack didn't work and broke down from the inside. The pack was life, a home. Corranochender fended just fine for himself on his own, but he was a social creature and didn't want to spend the rest of his life alone and wandering. "I understand." He murmured. RE: Get over your hill and see what you find on the other side - Antumbra - March 19, 2017 Gonna wrap this up! <3 New one soon?
The male seems to understand her words but it will be his actions that give him purpose. She narrows her eyes in one last scrutiny but the next few weeks will really determine his place among them. Her nose points in the direction she’d come and she carefully begins to take a few steps back before she turns to return the way she’d come. The redwoods stand like defending giants in the distance. On the trip back, she tells him of their ways and his position. He is to stand in the forest, away from the cavern—Hougeda—until he has proven himself. |
