deer droppings - RIP Kaertok - July 03, 2017 Sungiwok did not think his brother would approve of this place, but it was not a bad place. The trees were lush, and it would likely make a good secondary hunting ground for the Tartok and Anneriwok wolves, should they decide to settle upon the mountain. His brother had not given a yes or a no on the mountain yet (so far as he had heard), so Malrok did not halt his exploration for their home. Still, it would not hurt to explore the lands that surrounded a potential home. The mountain would be only one aspect, should they choose it, and Kaertok had always been a wanderer at heart. There was plenty of prey here, as was evidenced by the multitudes of deer trails criss-crossing the forest. Not just that, but the smell of deer droppings was strong. Yes, this would make for good hunting grounds if they settled anywhere nearby. RE: deer droppings - ZC14 - July 03, 2017 Kavrak was unaware of the younger brother's plan. Anuniaq led them and that was undisputed, but the dark wolf said little and less of his particular plan. It nettled her to not know whether they were staying or not. She was an impatient creature who liked swift, decisive action. If he liked the mountain, why did he not mark it? If he didn't like the mountain, why were they still here? He and Kuasak were like-minded, she thought as she descended into a glade at the mountain's base. They needed to scout out every inch of a place before making their final decision. Kavrak was much quicker than that to choose. If it was up to her, she would not have chosen this mountain. Too tall. Difficult to traverse even for the most surefooted and difficult to fight on and defend as a result. Tartok was all about challenges, but there was always a point where a challenge became a hindrance. But the decision was Anuniaq's, and she could but wait for word and make herself useful in the meantime. She descended into the glade, determined to track down another food source besides the herd. As she came across the elder brother's scent, she came to know that he was quicker, too. With a half hidden smirk, the Anneriwok picked up her pace. She inhaled deeply as she went, catching every smell of deer imaginable, and a variety of other critters, too. Well populated. A veritable feast in the bushes. Primarily, though, she noted Kaertok's musk, and began to creep after him with silent steps. A test of her abilities, and of his. RE: deer droppings - RIP Kaertok - July 11, 2017 Sungiwok's ear swiveled back at the footsteps that followed him. He had been doing this longer than Kavrak, but only because he was older. If they'd been the same age, they would have been equally matched. "You'll have to work on that," he said with a smirk, "if you want to sneak up on me." He wondered why she was not upon the mountain with the others, scouting out what might be their new home. He stopped and bent his front end to make his body into a "U," turning to face Kavrak's skulking form. He squinted, trying to figure out where she was. He'd heard her, but he couldn't pinpoint her visually just yet. His ears pivoted, trying to track her exact location, but he couldn't seem to find her. Perhaps she blended in more easily with the foliage. RE: deer droppings - ZC14 - July 12, 2017 He was the greater, for now. Kavrak was a born hunter and it was only a matter of time before she was as proficient as any master of the chase. Still, Kaertok detected her easily enough and she stilled her steps with an inaudible hitch of her breath. She had a lot to learn still. Being Tartok made her believe she was an elite, but she was still just a yearling. She might be superior to many other yearlings, but among her own kith and kin, she was nothing yet. She slung her body low in the brush and flared her nostrils in an effort to tell what he was doing. Kaertok couldn't see her, and Kavrak couldn't see him. Momentarily they were at a stalemate, but she knew he would probably win it. Nevertheless, she attempted to sneak to the left, moving her feet slowly and placing them deliberately, as quiet as she could be. If nothing else, even if she was destined to fail, Skull Cap could try to flank him. RE: deer droppings - RIP Kaertok - July 12, 2017 Kaertok strained to hear her, though he still couldn't spot her in the brush. The smell of her had drifted toward him, so his thinking that she was nearby was only further confirmed. He had no intention of hiding himself, and instead stood still, waiting for her to slip up and reveal herself before she came forth... assuming she was attempting to avoid further detection. He contemplated what he would do in her situation. Being less serious than his siblings, he likely would have snuck off as quietly as possible, leaving them to wonder if they'd merely thought he had been nearby. Fighting was just as much of a mental game as it was physical. That was the part that many of the Tartok and Anneriwok failed to realize. It was, perhaps, why Sungiwok had always felt a bit of an outsider compared to his brothers and sisters. RE: deer droppings - ZC14 - July 23, 2017 She was able to get away with creeping around him for a short while, but in the end, Kaertok discovered her. She commended him on his skill. Even she was not yet that patient and observant. She thought she might be able to learn from him in time, and knew him to be a worthy asset to Tartok. When she left the forest to return to the mountain, it was with a fond smile on her lips. |
