Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - January 12, 2018

Looking about warily for anyone who might be approaching, and seeing no one, Gannet began to lift himself carefully into a sitting position.  Biting back against the pain, he slowly stood, keeping to his three good legs and gingerly avoiding moving the fourth too much.  It rested awkwardly as he stood, but despite the discomfort, he tentatively limped his way out to relieve himself.

When he returned, he remained on his paws for a minute, twisting around to gnaw at an itch on his shoulder.  He could slowly and painfully make his way around a bit now, but he still didn't have near his usual mobility back yet, and it made tasks like this hard to accomplish when he couldn't sit and twist like he was used to.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - January 13, 2018

*hordes u*

Liffey had done her best to visit Gannet often. He was healing steadily, though not quickly enough for her comfort. She enjoyed having her friend near, but each day that passed made her more and more anxious. She could not shake the feeling that he was in danger here, no matter the fact that no one had made a move to harm him since bringing him into the territory. She knew herself well enough to know that she wouldn't feel comfortable until he was safely back at the Caldera, but that was still some ways off. So, she contented herself to drop by at every opportunity if only to keep an eye out for trouble.

The half-eaten rabbit she carried in her jaws couldn't really be considered fresh. She'd caught it and buried it a few days before, but the icy ground had kept it in decent condition. Holding it actually was making her a little hungry, but this particular meal was reserved for the young male she was excited to see up and moving around. Her tail wagged as she approached and tossed the rabbit over to him. "Look at you," Liffey commented with a smile, "You'll be ready to go mountain climbing with me again in no time."

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - January 15, 2018

When Liffey arrived, Gannet's tail immediately set to going, and he took a few awkward, hopping steps back to give her room. "Hey!" He said, perking up even more when he saw the rabbit.  He felt a momentary regret he couldn't be out there chasing rabbits with her, like the old days, but it passed quickly.  He was hopefully recovering and would be able to soon enough!

Her frequent visits were extremely welcome, and he was happy she seemed to be happy about his being up.  He'd half expected a reproach for not sitting out, but he was to antsy to do so at the moment.

"Have you climbed them?" He asked, obviously impressed.  These mountains were way more than the ones back home, and he'd love to go for it once he was back in shape.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Charon - January 18, 2018

After his talk with Alya Charon had become more wary. What if she was right and Liffey and Rannoch weren't reliable? Who was Liffey even, really? He'd always liked her because of how she was -- part of this was for the same reasons he had always liked Dhole, until she up and left, the light-hearted clumsiness and jokes and the good-natured sweetness -- but if his daughters had only poor experiences with her, then maybe they were right. And he wondered if she and Rannoch were really pulling their weight, or if so far, they'd been a charity case considering how much Rannoch had taken in his first few months in the pack. Charon was not so sure those months had been repaid just yet.

The fact that Julia hadn't returned home yet further confirmed his suspicions Redhawk Caldera had to be up to something. They must've taken her, he thought anxiously to himself. Redhawk Caldera had taken another of his girls — this was a thread that was wildly growing out of control. How could they safely bring another litter to this world without fear of Redhawk Caldera coming 'round to kill their pups?

When he found Liffey chatting with the Redhawk prisoner he felt wary, too. What if they were talking about... the complot against Moonspear (dun dun dunnn!). He narrowed his eyes but quickly pulled his face straight again as he approached them. He chuffed to announce his presence, though in hindsight thought maybe he should've tried to stay out of sight and hearing range and listen in on them. "Have you seen Julia?" he asked Liffey specifically once he'd reached them, but eyeing Gannet from the side in case he wanted to chip in on an answer too.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - January 20, 2018

Liffey grinned at her friend as he greeted her. She saw his face light up at the sight of rabbit and was gratified by his appreciation. If she had known before how good it felt to be able to provide food to her loved ones, she probably would've spent more time working on her skills a long time ago. She supposed it was better late than never, and settled down onto her haunches to enjoy a nice conversation. "Not yet really, but I have plans to in the Spring when the..."

Liffey's voice trailed off as she heard footsteps. She turned to see Charon and immediately her posture shifted to one of respect. She hadn't seen him much since Galaxy's death, though she did not miss his scent whenever she moved about the mountain. The sight of him here so near to Gannet caused her heart to clench with anxiety, but she took a breath to calm herself. Charon was her friend. He had been good to her, and she had been working hard to do well by him and the pack. She trusted him to know that her efforts hadn't gone unnoticed, and she had to trust that he would continue keeping Gannet safe after he'd done just that these past weeks.

God she's dumb. Why am I just noticing this.

The question her alpha asked caused her to wilt slightly. "No, I haven't," she answered honestly, frowning softly. She liked Korei very much and she too had noticed the girl's scent had faded. She'd considered searching for her friend, but she thus far had struggled to make herself go when she was still so anxious about Gannet's safety.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - January 22, 2018

Gannet enthusiastically listened as Liffey began to answer, but his demeanor shifted immediately the instant Charon entered.  He remained where he was, but his smile disappeared, and silently he watched as the leader asked about a wolf he did not know.  His ears tilted back and, uncomfortable, he looked at Liffey when she answered.  Of course she would know who he was asking about; likely it was a packmate.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Charon - January 24, 2018

All the smallest details sparked the Alpha's mistrust and paranoia what with all that was going on. Even Liffey's respectful body posture made him wonder if she was hiding anything. He liked to believe that Alya was wrong, but he didn't remember his girls ever being wrong about anything, so how could she? Charon felt conflicted considering how very fondly he had thought of Liffey before all of this, but with the present situation at hand everything was out of whack and different somehow and the (self-made up by Charon's brain) evidence seemed to point in Alya's favour so far.

Liffey seemed genuinely concerned for Julia, but maybe she didn't know anything about this all. He looked at Gannet, too, but no answer came to his question. Looking back to Liffey, Charon said, "I haven't seen her in a while." It was too late to follow the scent trails now but he feared that she might've been taken somehow. Then he glanced at Gannet again and said, half to Gannet and half to Liffey: "How's the leg?"

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - January 26, 2018

Gannet added nothing to the conversation, but the change in his demeanor was palpable to Liffey. She glanced at him briefly as he tensed, her heart clenching at the sight. It was awful to see her friend so uncomfortable. Though she saw no hostility in the way Charon regarded him, she couldn't help the quickening of her own pulse as her heartbeat rose to match his.

Charon responded simply, stating what Liffey had already assumed was the case. She felt the guilt twist inside of her again that she had not acted yet on Korei's disappearance, but she remained silent as the alpha questioned her friend instead of pursuing the topic of their wayward packmate further. Inwardly she struggled as the offer to search for Korei crawled up into her throat and settled just behind her lips where it would stay for the moment.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - January 27, 2018

He didn't mean to make Liffey upset, but he sensed her discomfort matching his own, and he fought (unsuccessfully) to calm down.  Still, the memory of the previous meeting was fresh in his mind, and he simply couldn't relax around the alpha.

The question at least gave him something to latch onto, and he was almost grateful.  "Better," he answered.  Not better better, obviously; he had a few weeks to go on that account.  But he could stand, could move a bit so long as he kept all weight off of it, and it hurt less.  "Lyra's been helping."  He offered by way of a neutral topic, not mentioning her own problems with him, or her comments as to his future.  He didn't want Liffey to know those either, not now.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Charon - January 31, 2018

There was tension in the air and it was no wonder; Charon himself had been tense, and though his demeanour was neutral he felt like he was a hair trigger away from snapping at any given moment. Should someone reveal that either wolf here had been involved in killing Galaxy his teeth were at the ready, for he was tired of feeling like he could not protect his family and his pack like he ought to. Yet for now the conversation remained civil. Liffey remained silent though looked tense and nothing like her usual chipper self, a thing that concerned Charon for it made him feel paranoid that she may be preparing for the eventual betrayal by detaching now. Or perhaps she was simply calling him names in her head, the same names that he — No. Better, he heard and he nodded absently. No. He was awesome. It was the wolves that'd harmed his family that should feel this way, not he. It wasn't his fault.

Lyra's been helping. Charon nodded again, though he imagined that she wouldn't have been all too kind in her helping. "Ah." He let it simmer for a moment, the tension, the uncomfortable feelings, the awkwardness, while he numbly felt the wind play with his fur as a breeze drifted by.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - February 03, 2018

Gannet gave his usual short response, which wasn't unexpected. Charon's short response, however, was. Liffey looked at him, sadness for her friend seeping across her heart. She'd been very selfish since Galaxy's death, and she had known it. Selfish in a very selfless way, for it had been her concern for her childhood friend's well-being that had consumed her, but selfish nonetheless as it had been her childhood friend. She had not reached out to her packmates the way she ought to have. The condolences she'd shared with Hydra had been given out of circumstance - had the girl not been there the day she'd come to see Gannet, Liffey would not have sought her out. That was not to say they hadn't been given in earnest, but she should have done better. This family might not be hers, but they had taken her in and cared for Rannoch like their own. All this effort at being a good, dutiful packmate, and she had failed them on the most basic of levels.

"Charon, is there anything I can do for you? Your family?" Liffey asked, her voice small but unwavering, "I can head out for a while and look for Korei, if you wish? I am a ranger, and really. Anything you need - I'm here." She paused before saying much more, realizing she was fumbling her words and likely doing a poor job at expressing herself, as usual. She was loathe to leave Gannet for as long as it would take for her to really search for Charon's wayward daughter, but Rannoch would be here, and they really hadn't done anything to hurt him further. Maybe Charon might even let her escort him back to the Caldera now... just maybe.

Probably not.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - February 05, 2018

Gannet had always been empathetic, more attuned to body language than words, and more comfortable communicating as such. So Charon's tense silence spoke volumes. He frowned, knowing that the leader was upset, but still unsure what he could do to resolve this. It was a situation well beyond his powers... he sensed that the only way to increase himself in their eyes was to denounce the Redhawks entirely. And he wasn't willing to do that.

He remained silent, letting Liffey say her piece to this new family, but realization of a sort was slowly setting in; she couldn't back him in this, not unless she wanted to be treated the same. He didn't want that.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Charon - February 07, 2018

It was clear that Liffey wasn't feeling too comfortable when she asked him if there was anything she could do. While he didn't think that she was being non-genuine he couldn't help but wonder if her reasons were candid. Was she feeling guilty? What was going on? But she'd always been kind to him — he had always regarded her fondly before. And Rannoch was still Eshe's kid... His mouth felt dry at the thought of betrayal and there was a frown on his face as he thought about it now, in her presence, though it could easily be mistaken for a frown of worry for Julia.

"Thank you," he said, not really indicating whether he wanted her to do anything. She could figure that out herself. Should she return Julia tomorrow, that'd be enough proof for him that she was reliable, but he didn't count on it. There were so many places she could be. "I should go." Charon glanced at Gannet and then Liffey, nodded, and started making his way out of the situation. While walking away he looked over his shoulder once or twice to see if they were happily chatting again, silently hoping that Liffey'd choose to do something useful for the pack with her time, that she'd not stay and socialise with the enemy.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - February 10, 2018

we can prolly wrap up since I stole your other thread? lol

Charon thanked her, but Liffey didn't sense much in the way of actual gratitude in it. She nodded in response and watched him go sadly. He was her friend, and so she gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was simply too tired and too heartbroken over the loss of two daughters to have much room for any emotion besides sadness or worry. She was so wrong about that, but she was oblivious, and thus I get to keep having fun with her.

She turned back to Gannet as the alpha disappeared, her eyes sweeping across his face for the reaction she knew would be written there.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - February 11, 2018

After Charon left, when Gannet looked at Liffey, his reaction was indeed scrawled clearly on his face. Mostly worry, now directed back at her. "Should you.... go?" He asked, knowing now again how they felt about him. He didn't want to drag her reputation down as well, and much as he liked she and Hydra's company, it wasn't worth that. He would leave it up to her to decide, but he needed to ask, to let her know it was ok.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Liffey - February 11, 2018

Liffey watched her friend, silently. His suggestion was like a knife to her heart, for her thoughts ran along the same course as his. It was an awful thing to feel like she was being judged for caring for her childhood friend, and it killed her that Gannet clearly was aware of how their relationship was affecting her status in the pack. He clearly felt terrible. She felt terrible. She couldn't help but feel like this was no way to live.

Liffey nodded softly, making a rather pathetic attempt at a smile as she stepped forward to nudge his shoulder affectionately. She would go, but not because of what the pack would think of her for staying. Only because she didn't trust herself to speak just then, not when so much bitterness was so close to the surface. If she stayed, she knew that she wouldn't be able to hold it back anymore, and then where would they be? So she turned and departed without another word.

RE: Never hold back your step for a moment - Gannet - February 11, 2018

He watched her go, the turned and settled in, staring at the wall of the cave with a sigh that seemed to deflate his entire form. He was glad she'd accepted, and knew it meant nothing bad for their relationship, but a lonely ache started the moment she left. He had hoped to come here to reunite with his friend, and now his status as pack prisoner was affecting even this.

The prickle off resentment he felt next was greater, and he shoved it down, attempting but failing for a while before sleep finally took him.
