bap the bat - Tux - June 07, 2018

it a beautiful blue day, clear and bright.  he was laying flat on the ground, legs splayed straight in each direction, soaking up the sunlight.  out of nowhere, a single drop of rain hit him in the head and he squalled, displeased.  he huffed and squirmed about an inch to the left, hoping that would do the trick.

nope.  another fat drop of rain hit him square on the back.  hey! he shouted at the sky.  what was the meaning of this?

RE: bap the bat - Bat - June 07, 2018

Bat wasn't far from Tux, sprawled upside down in her own patch of sunlight, one banded foreleg crooked over her pale tum, which swelled with her latest meal. Unlike her brother, she didn't react negatively when big, cold raindrops began to plunk from the sky. The first one went ignored entirely, despite hitting her square in the crevice of her right hind leg. The second one—which caught the edge of her nostril—caused one closed eyelid to slowly crack open to reveal a sliver of faded pewter right before she let out a delicate sneeze.

It was beginning to rain! Despite her age, little Bat was turning out to be a rather, well, lackadaisical entity. One thing that could rouse enthusiasm in her, though, was water in any form. With a grunt, the small Goufa rolled onto her belly, then pushed upward into a sit with a cry of, "Wadoo!" This exclamation was followed shortly thereafter by a peal of downright cherubic laughter.

he moved closer to his sister as he watched the sky's colour begin to shift into a solid pale grey — kind of like bat's tum!  he squinted up at the clouds, his gaze moving between the sky and his sister.

where from?  he could see it come down from way up in the clouds, but he did not quite understand what rain was yet.  why?

he held his mouth open and tried to catch a drop, nudging his sister and motioning for her to do the same.  pway catch.

She glanced at Tux when he moved closer, an inquisitive look on his face. When asked about the source of the rain, Bat followed his gaze upward. "Sky," she said in babyish Trigedasleng. When prompted for a reason, she blinked slowly, head cocking thoughtfully before offering a shrug and an, "I'ono."

Next he motioned for her to copy him as he opened his mouth wide to catch the steadily increasing raindrops. Bat watched him for a moment, then tilted her own head skyward again and stuck out her tongue. It reminded her of the times @Portia had stopped by the den to play doctor. "AHHH," the Goufa ejaculated reflexively, then let out a noise somewhere between a giggle and a gurgle when a drop of water plopped right on her outstretched tongue.

he leaned against his sister, letting their puppy fluff rub together.  the breeze had turned cold but not uncomfortable as it came in from the water to the north of the cliffs.

the goufa copied bat's enthusiastic, ahhh! and stuck his fat tongue out for a drop of water, but it was his sister who was rewarded this time.  boo!  hiss!

but instead of being displeased he looked towards her with wide eyes.  how'sit?  he stuck his tongue out again, but only his eye was met with rain.  ouch!

Bat's brow furrowed at Tux's question, taking it quite seriously. "Code," she reported after a solid ten seconds of consideration. She wanted to describe it otherwise, though she was so young that she simply lacked the vocabulary to explain how it sort of tingled against her teeth before trickling down her throat, chilly the entire way, even when it hit her belly.

She tipped her head again, prepared to catch some more raindrops to wash down her heavy lunch. But what had begun as a gentle sprinkle quickly increased, becoming more of a proper downpour. Undeterred, the Goufa closed both her eyes and her mouth and just let the water beat against her face. She wanted to describe this to Tux too but it was even more indescribable than a single drop to the tongue.

Out of nowhere, something grabbed her by the scruff. Bat's eyes flew open and she gave a token peep of protest but let her mother carry her into the den. As Wildfire leaped back out to gather Tux as well, Bat gave her head a little shake, flinging cold droplets against the wooden walls. Reacting to some deeply-ingrained instinct, she cocked her head and then shuddered with an odd laugh as cold water trickled from where it had collected in her satellite dish of an ear.

cold was right, but it didn't seem effective enough.  very code, he supplied, his one eye glued shut.  it wasn't like mama's milk, and it wasn't like any of the water puddles they had access to.

as the water began to pour down he copied his sister, although fortunately his small, teddybearish rounded ears did not collect water like hers.  after wildfire had relocated them to the logden, he turned wide-eyed to look at his sister, tilting her head the same way she did even though he had no reason to.  why for?

RE: bap the bat - Bat - July 02, 2018

Once the sensation subsided, Bat rotated her head to let the opposite ear drain, which tickled even worse. She giggled and thumped her hind feet against the soggy wooden floor, smiling when Tux rejoined her. He seemed curious about her movements and even mirrored the tilt of her head.

"Wadoo," she said, "tick-uh!" But now both ears were drained and there was no more of that simultaneously titillating and irritating feeling.

Straightening out a bit, Bat plopped forward onto her belly and slithered nearer to the log's opening again, peering out at the rain. Wildfire's quiet warning ("Stay inside or you won't get dessert") wasn't strictly necessary. The Goufa settled there, content, eyes wide as saucers as she watched the water pour from the sky, transforming the world.
