in spite of the uneven odds, beauty lifts from the earth - Nanook - July 21, 2018

@Siarut Forward-dated to around the 26/27th, when they've arrived at the Glacier! (:

Nanook remembered this place, remembered when she had struck the ground the winter before, with the intent to run and never turn back. Following Polaris to escape the guilt, the memories, the ghosts. These lands had been too much for her then, and the North had offered her a new beginning she thought this South could never give: a tablet for her to rewrite her life that ran white as the snow that covered the tundras.

And yet that pursuit had not been straight-forward, and had led her South again, time after time, until she found herself here, at rest in this new yet familiar land as the evening sky gleamed with the wakening stars, and the faintest glow of the Northern Lights.

Her warm breath mingled with the air, and her claws clicked upon the cool stone. The pack roamed about, somewhere in the mountains or forests below, but up here, the glacial plane reflected the dim hues of twilight and offered the refreshing rest of solitude she had gone too long without. There was still much work to be done, and she would soon set to the task of ensuring these slopes held no threat of predator - but she could always find time to pause for the night. So Nanook took the moment of respite for what it was and cast her gaze skyward to trace the familiar bodies of constellations and celestial hosts, and simply marvelling in the quiet of her heart.

His talk with his sister had given him much needed strength, to know that she had his back and would stand alongside him during this trying time gave him hope. The effort of keeping his family safe and moving over the last month had taken it's toll on him. Siarut had always been a serious one, yet strangly kind and gentle, now his smiles were few and far between. He held a stern experssion wherever he went, and only the pups could be seen to bring about his tenderness.

Venturing away from the dens where his family rested, Siarut stumble upon the cross scent of one more who he wished to check on. He hadn't wanted to crowd her on their journey, he wasn't sure if she had wanted time to deal with the rocky start. The ice bear turned in her direction, and came upon a sight to behold. The silver lady had her head stretched toward the sky, as if her very nose could touch the stars above. He wasn't sure what she was looking at, but she was awe struck. After a moment he took slow steps toward her, without saying a word.

Draco. Cassiopeia. Perseus. They blinked alive, each in turn, as if having roused from the longest sleep, and she greeted them as friends. She failed to notice the apparition of her company, his silent watch, and his steps toward her. For all she knew, she was alone up here with herself and the soaring light of the heavens.

A gentle sway shifted through the length of her legs as she watched the brightening aurora capture and release the constellations in its dance. The motion was bittersweet; she remembered a time long past when Nanurjuk would dance with the shifting radiance, how, in those moments, the wear of her aged body would seem to fall away to reveal the youth of a heart that wouldn't be contained by her weathered bones. Nanook's anaanatsiaq was no longer here to dance below the lights with her, but Nanook held her memory close and she found herself moving through the circular weave that had been their custom every night the borealis would glow - slower, and nostalgic, but as she turned she felt the rhythm of the dance begin to take her -

the movement of ivory caught her paws and she seized to a jarring stop. It took her a moment to distinguish the sibling, but the heavens reflected the vibrant green of the other's eyes, and she felt a sudden heat rise to her cheeks. "Ice Bear." Her heart fluttered through the fog of her breath. How long had he been watching?

So sorry for the wait!

The dancing woman captured his gaze as he watched her beauty rival that of the glowing, shifting lights above. He had always differed from his father in his love for the subtle grace of nature and the thrill that it could bring. Sirmiq prefered the ridgidness of battle, and the straightforward thinking of rule or be ruled. For all the similarities between the father and son, Siarut was a great lover of the megacosm. And this sight made him realize why, until seh suddenly stopped.

Tilting his head, he gave her a smile. "You don't have to stop on my account." The ice bear wished that she had continued, he would have gladly watched her all night. Tearing his gaze from the woman he looked to the sky, "Your dance is beautiful. Where did you learn it?"  He had seen similar dances before in the north, although none in his own clan had ever thought to learn. His father had never found an interest in it, and so had been to strict to allow any to learn.

No worries! :)
The air was cold, she knew, but her ears burned and she flustered beneath his smile. There was something pointedly dreadful in the thought of dancing alone before her friend, and yet, something that made her want to simply recapture the rhythm and continue her step for him. Yet all she found herself able to do was tip her muzzle while a shy smile wreathed about the edges of her mouth. Siarut turned to study skyward, but she stayed her gaze on him. The lights danced their way to paint the canvas of his fur.

She smiled. "Her name was Nanurjuk," she offered, and with this tipped her head to watch the sky. "My anaanatsiaq. She told me she learned it from the lights." And she remembered how Nanurjuk would often spend nights staring heavenward, whispering and shifting as if discerning some deep complexity of the cosmos, only to emerge from her studies a few nights later with the outcome of her findings: a new step, a new turn, an unexpected tap in a dance that always seemed to be changing with the shifting of the lights.

It was made for many dancers, and Nanook missed the energy she had felt as she and Nanurjuk had leapt and twined around each other, mimicking the hues as much as the rhythm of the dance. For a very long time, she had turned through the steps alone. But now, with a pack behind her, and a friend before her - one she felt a strange comfort and uncertainty toward, she  found herself thinking, wondering aloud... "Do you... dance, Siarut?" And she awaited a no.

Knowledge passing from one generation to the next was inspiring, and Nanook's story made this whole journey worth it. Understanding that they had travelled so far to give Shivali's children a chance to be northern, that all of IkKanattuk would be passing on teachings and traditions from one generation to the next. "She sounds like an amazing woman." He's smile brightened at the thought, as he leveled his gaze on the woman as her question fell from her lips.

"No, I never had the chance to learn." He gave a small shake to emphasise his words. Siarut wasn't sure if he would ever be as skilled as she was, but he longed to dance with the lights and to some how be apart of her traditions. "Would you teach me?" His query held a shyness in tone that wasn't often associated with the large male, he was often straightforward and made no apologise in his wake. But this was different, and was suddenly unsure of himself. He didn't want to push her away, but he wanted to feel the rythm she had found so easily.

next up on WOLF: how do the wolf dancers do.

"She was everything I hope to be." One day, she hoped she would reflect the wisdom of Nanurjuk in the lines around her own eyes, careful creases eroded by time and laughter, memoirs that through every struggle, suffering, and grief, life could still be beautiful. She wished Siarut could have met her.

Nanook shifted on her toes when he answered her, not at all surprised, but feeling a sudden rush of heat for even asking. It was okay, of course, that he didn't know how, but she had hoped -

Her gaze fluttered up, and she felt the heat in her cheeks burn deeper at his request, yet different than before. Siarut seemed to be dancing through his words, and while in fights and tussles she could force herself forward with bared fangs and claws outstretched, Nanook felt like she was tiptoeing on eggshells here. The half-blood tipped her nose in acquiescence and felt her lips tug with the uncertainty in everything about this.

"Um, well, I've never taught anyone before..." but she was already moving with her words, positioning herself beneath the lights and preparing to teach him the way Nanurjak had somehow guided her once clunky steps. She shook herself before she glanced at him and flashed a smile. "It's simple, once you know what to do. Here," and she tried to show him, moving in the slow movement of a four-stepped pattern, circular and revolving as she felt the lights lead her, hitching only once when she glanced up to survey the lights and caught her eyes on him instead.

"Oops,"  She murmured and regained her step with a nervous laugh, but her skin prickled with a rush of the mistake. Maybe that was enough for now, and so she slowed and nodded for him to try. "A lot of it's in feeling the lights," she added, as her heart thundered with every word, "Letting them lead you. Watching their dance as it guides your own."

Siarut didn't notice her anxiousness, but rather watched her paws glide along to the lights that glistened above their heads. He could see just out of his periphery the auroras joined into the steps, the pale man tried to follow along. He smiled at her as her gaze landed on him for a moment, sheepish in his hesitant movements.

He nodded and turned his green gaze from Nanook to try and meld with the lights. Swaying as they swayed, Siarut tried to follow the steps that had been so beautifully displayed by his northern counterpart. He tried in vain. The brute had trouble giving himself over to the lights, his mind to preoccupied. He looked over to his dance partner. "I'm not sure I've got it."

Nanook settled to watch him closely, much as she did with the rocks, the clouds, and the weather. Observing, appraising, searching out patterns and how he strayed - yet this felt different, and at times, when she'd find her gaze had lifted from his paws to his face, her cheeks burned with a peculiar warmth, and she felt the need to look away. Which was silly, of course - but she did, though the feeling remained.

His steps fell heavy, more like the pound of hail than the ethereal flow of light. She imagined his size played a factor, but even Nanurjak, a bear of a wolf herself, had mastered a step that made her size seem weightless, more like smoke than flesh and blood. Siarut had the pattern down - that was the easy part - but he lacked in feeling, in spirit. He moved, and the lights moved, but they danced a different dance, and from his words, the Ice Bear seemed to notice this, too.

She was already on her paws when he turned to her. "You've got the steps down," she slipped into a position opposite him and shook herself, knowing full well her own body ran with an unwelcome tension. From the travel, most like, and she thought no further on that. "Moving with the aurora is the hardest part. I struggled with that too," it was less of a science than what she was used to, "Nanurjak used to pretend to be the lights for me. It was easier to watch her than the sky while I was learning," absently, she circled her paw on the ground, "Perhaps we could try that."

Nanook would fall into rhythm again if he agreed, but for now, though prepped for movement, she waited. If he was not comfortable, or if he wanted to stop, she would not press him for more - but if he was willing, she would begin the dance again, for Siarut to follow.

RE: in spite of the uneven odds, beauty lifts from the earth - Siarut - August 12, 2018

music for this post...... just saying can't dance without it

She stepped forward, aligning herself opposit to him. The pale man could help, but watch the woman as she spoke. Her words making sense, and added to the relationship that she shared with this Nanurjak. She had obviously meant a lot for Nanook to keep her on her mind for such a long period of time. Siarut felt honored to learn in the same way Nanook had. Giving her a rare, bright grin Siarut nodded. "I would like that."

The grin never left his face as she led him in a gorgeous dance. Watching her sway, and her paws glide over the earth, Siarut was quick to follow her lead. His gaze lingered on her body, trying to replicate the motions she took with ease. Setting each foot with a certainty her tutalage afforded him. His large form was lost, and his quick feet came  through. Watching the smaller form of Nanook dancing with him gave Siarut the chance to find his rhythm, and soon enough he realize he was lost in the motion. Lost to the lights, lost to the sounds around him. All that was there was Nanook and the soul of Nanurjak that she projected.

He had lost himself to the soul of the world, the emotions of thir surroundings, he lost himself to Nanook.

RE: in spite of the uneven odds, beauty lifts from the earth - Nanook - August 14, 2018

AHH !! <3

She couldn't help the careful grin that slipped across her face when Siarut agreed, and she breathed in, allowing the heat of his eyes to thaw her anxious step as she turned to the sky, to the stars, to the lights, and willed them to lead her, as they had always proved so faithful to do. And as she moved with them, the levity returned, the sensation of soaring, as if she had ascended to the heavens to dance her way through the lights themselves; as if she could touch them, and the quiet hum of a song lulled in the depths of her throat, her heart lost in the rhythm and the sound of Siarut's careful steps across from hers.

Nanook remembered the last time she had danced like this. It had been the night Nanurjak had passed, when the sun had set and the pack had gathered to celebrate her life in the company of the stars. Nanook had joined them, for a time, but eventually had slipped away to wander, and to gaze at the heavens that shone so brightly for her. That was when she had first danced alone, a commemoration of the end of something great, and the beginning of something she hadn't had the eyes to see.

But as her gaze traced the colours of the sky tonight, vibrant and green, she tracked down until she rested on her partner and grazed the like colour of his eyes. He rose and fell with the rhythm she offered, the steps she borrowed from the lights, and soon her movements shifted, and she placed her steps in the patterns he set across the ground. They were different than Nanurjak's, and different, from her own. But they were his, and the slightest laugh spilled from her mouth as she wove through his steps to try them for herself.

RE: in spite of the uneven odds, beauty lifts from the earth - Siarut - August 14, 2018

There was no matching her steps perfectly, the intricacies of the dance were not lost on the northern man, but he figured each had their own way. She swayed with such a careless ease that Siarut couldn't help be stare, his laughter bubbling alongside her own. This is what he wanted. To be carefree, and feel the lightness of the world.

Siarut could see the darkness that so often invaded his world, and clouded his judement. For the first time since leaving the Woods, since leaving Ceara, he felt as if the cloud was passing. The northern lights drew a path to a better future, a brighter one than he could have ever imagined. And just like that, he was no longer watching Nanook for the rhythm, suddenly he had found his own. Interpreting the lights as he saw fit.

Slowly returning his gaze to the woman across from him, his smile beamed. While they moved in a smilar fashion, they were each uniqe. How he wished his sisters could see the glee in her eyes, in his eyes. In that moment he wished time would just stop.
