it's been so long you thought you would die - RIP Lainie - July 24, 2018

dated for the 22nd, after the Maegi thread
@Rokig
Poisoned and thrown to the sea, there was no real chance for survival. The grey-furred yearling had always been a fighter, a survivor, grasping on to the barest threads of hope and turning them into life— but there were no threads to grasp, here. Her lungs were filling quickly with water, waves battering the outside of her body even as another war waged within; she would die soon.
She was conscious, somehow. Barely, painfully, but aware. There were some thoughts; trivial things, distant and quickly passing. Her life had never been important enough to inspire dramatic flashbacks or an epiphany. There was no one to mourn her passing, no one for her to think maybe she'd miss when she was dead. Briefly she lamented the realization that she'd never be warm again— and then there was only cold, dull blue and the crushing sound of nothing.

He was a fisher and so it only seemed fitting that he would fish her from the ocean not once but twice.

Rokig had begged her (not exactly but almost begged) to not swim in the deep ends again. He could find exciting things for her to do outside of the ocean's depths. Panic squeezed his chest harder this time than it had the first time. Something seemed wrong about the scene. More than just her being in the water. It didn't look like she was fighting like she had the first time, even when the water didn't seem so harsh this time. Something was terribly wrong.

He crashed into the water as a loud whine vibrated through his throat. For someone who was mostly trained in grabbing fish you would have thought he would have had better luck at grabbing Lainie. He missed a few times as the ocean seemed to toy with him.

Give her back! He shouted as if the waters might actually listen to him. Salty tears pooled in his eyes, likly going missed thanks to an already saltwater-soaked face. Then he managed to get over his emotions (for a brief moment, god he was probably going to have a mental breakdown after) and grab her scruff. Giving it everything he got the Seawolf attempted to pull her back onto shore.

Consciousness came to her in the form of teeth around her scruff, light flickering back in the final moments of her rescue. Her lungs were so heavy she didn't dare try to breathe, but in a moment her body decided this would not do at all and the first heaves of a violent fit of coughing and retching began. It felt as if a million little knives were digging their way out of her abdomen slowly and deliberately. Salt water came up copiously both from her lungs and stomach, the latter containing bits of plant matter— a scant amount that had escaped her initial purge.
There was no strength left in her. When the coughing and gagging finally subsided, she could only fall limp and breathe. It came fast and shallow, hitching with each rise of cutting pain in her stomach. Aaa—aaahhhh... The cry came softly, and she trembled. The trembling stopped after a few beats, and she went rigid. Then, a violent tremor took hold of her body, different from the cold, pained shivering from before. It lasted over a minute, and as soon as the seizure released its grip she fell limp again, gasping and crying weakly.

lemme know if ya want anything changed<3

Her coughing was a good sign despite the fear that wracked his mind. He should have been happy that she was managing to get the water out of her system.

Silver eyes watched her collapsed with a sound that sent shivers down his spine.

Rokig was positively terrified. Terrified of her well-being, terrified of what could have caused this all to happen. He was selfishly thinking this was all his fault. If he had just helped her a little bit more or if he had never even brought her home at all maybe this never would have happened. He wouldn't have to watch one of his only friends be tortured by problems he couldn't fix.

He had to breathe and do something.

Her frame seemed to violently move in a way he knew to be familiar. Rokig did the only thing he new how to do, which was to oddly straddle her form like Reed had done to Mou. He couldn't help but cry at Lainie's form shaking against him. This was worse than anything he had dealt with before. He would rather be cursed a thousand times than to have to watch the scene below him.

Suddenly it was over and he could hear crying that wasn't his own. He could say nothing as he crouched protectively over her form trying to choke back his own sobs. The Seawolf could only hope the worst was over.

It took several moments to fully come back to awareness, pulled from the haze by the gnawing pain in her abdomen. Dimly she registered the feeling of another crouched over her, so close— too close. She tensed, the barest hints of some grotesque recollection tugging at her, and for a beat prepared to lash out. Somehow, she registered Rokig's scent before she could act.
She turned slightly, buried her face in his chest fur, and cried. It was all she could do for a few minutes, sobs hitching every time the pain in her stomach got worse. But eventually the nausea rose up again, and she pulled herself from under him as gently and quickly as she could to vomit several feet away; nothing came up but bile.
Rokig, The yearling choked out quietly when finally the heaving ceased. She shivered fiercely, making no attempt to move from where she stood— in fact, she looked as if she might fall over any moment. Please— I have to leave. I have to— A sob cut her words off. I have to get off the island. The vomiting promptly began again, just as violent as before.

He let her cry, not budging until she did. His form pulled back to allow her room to do as she needed. Dull eyes watched as bile met the earth. Lainie had looked weak when he had originally found her but she looked even worse now. Which - truth be told - he had no idea was possible.

His name was almost hurtful to hear. Half of him wasn't even sure it was his name the way she had choked it out. He tentatively shuffled forward, crouched towards the earth. Her please were not met with any deny. In fact, he was ready to comply as much as he could.

Okay. He murmured softly at first. I...I can't let you go alone, though. I won't let you go alone. Even if it meant leaving the island himself and his gut clenched tightly at the thought. If he explained the situation to Seelie and Stockholm would they understand his decision?

Rokig could not abandon the one he had decided to save. He would make sure she survived - thrived - after this close call.
