It's late, and the girl is restless. She can't sleep, as she'd spent all day dozing and resting rather than visiting her usual haunts. So she sets off to explore the territory under the cloak of night, a touch apprehensive. The forest is so quiet, she can hear the faint thrum of her heart. She's used to being alone — that doesn't bother her. But something about the stillness of nighttime unsettles her; still unaware of the concept of nocturnal creatures, she imagines all the animals are tucked away for the night, and the forest is empty.
So, the crack of a twig somewhere in the distance startles her more than it might usually. She jumps, fur fluffing, and takes a couple steps back. Her head jerks one direction, then the other, but she sees little under the scant light offered by the moon and stars. Dark shapes, shifting shadows — her imagination shapes them into horrific nameless creatures, beasts born of nightmares. Maybe not all of the animals are sleeping, she thinks — maybe something is going to eat her out here, and she'll never see mom or Arlette or Merrit again. It doesn't occur to her to run, or to fight; all she can think to do is sit down and cry, mind blank with terror.

He finds solace in the night, now that he has reign to wander. There is simply something to the dark that the daylight doesn't hold. The dance of light has long fled the forest ground to give way to the hesitant kiss of the moon, and while he misses the sun, he finds these hours hold more mystery than when the light spreads even to the coolest shadows, and this unknown is what intrigues him the most.

With his recent sprout in growth, the boy hasn't yet gained control of his footing, and the shadows complicate things. He imagines himself noisier than he'd been in many days, and as he moves he feels a branch snap under paw. He jerks his foot back, but the silence is already distilled, and he meets the moment with a crestfallen sigh. But his dismay goes no further, attention distracted by a quiet whine of distress that swells to meet him.

He recognizes the cry and turns toward her voice, though he cannot see her through the trees - yet her distress is loud, and stirs him toward her. "Keen," he whispers out, forehead drawn in concern, and edges closer until he can vaguely make out a huddled shape, small and insignificant beneath the towering forest - yet in his eyes, in this moment, there couldn't have been anyone more important than her.

She hears something moving towards her, but she can't quite make out what — or who — it is. Her ears flatten to her skull in terror at first, but even past her sobs she hears the ghost of her brother's whisper. Not quite enough to recognize him immediately or know what he'd said, but enough to recognize the voice as another wolf. She stands immediately on shaking limbs and takes a step toward him — but only one step.
Even though the sense of immediate danger has passed, her stomach is still churning and her head feels strange and light, as if it might float away any moment. Bile rises up in her throat and her head spins — for a moment, she thinks she might vomit. But the feeling passes quickly, and she's at her brother's side almost before she realizes she's moving again. It's not quite clear if the instinct to protect or to be protected drives her — but it doesn't really matter right now. She pushes her face into his scruff, immediately feeling more at ease; not quite safe, but safer. If there is something dangerous in the night, she feels better knowing they might both face it together. Though, she'd feel most safe if their mother was here, given moms have anti-monster qualities and all.

He stands like a watchtower and tracks her movement as Keen rises and turns - his sister, seemingly hesitant, and he, silent, still, and uncertain what to do. Does he move toward her? Does he stay and wait? But she makes that decision, and suddenly, she is beside him, and he is met by her embrace and the angular jut of her bones. She feels almost breakable as she burrows her face into his fur, and he feels a weight push upon his shoulders and the crest of his brow, joining with the heaviness he already carries with his father's departure.

The tension nestles between the crook of his shoulders and doesn't leave, and he turns and offers a kiss to the part of her cheek he can reach, even as a storm brews like a cloud in his mind. What's wrong? he finally asks, his voice a soft rumble and still edged with the pitch of youth, despite how deep it has grown.

She focuses on the sound of his heart and the feeling of his chest expanding against her with each breath, using it to ground herself. It takes her a moment to register his gentle question. Her ears flush with heat as she recalls the reason for her panic, and she pulls away slightly to answer. I — Her first instinct is to give him the truth; she'd been alone, she'd heard a strange noise. Shame cuts her off, however. She struggles for an excuse and comes up blank. I don't know. She says finally, voice thick with the rising urge to start crying again, and drops her face back into his fur. How can she admit that she'd been terrified of absolutely nothing?
