[YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Merrit - December 24, 2018

@Ira @Aerasha if either of you wants your gals to follow Merrit to the celebration! :D Also @Greyback @Valette for reference, or for joining/cameo! All others who are attending Yule are also most welcome to join! (: Right now, Merrit's just outside the willows trying to be discreet, but we'll see how long that lasts.
The night is young and punctuated by song, a sound of merriment carried by the lungs of a woman he cannot see, with a voice he neither recognizes nor knows. He has followed mother's scent to this place, and her trail cuts straight through the willows that sway in the midnight breeze. Greyback is clearly with her - this much he knew from the start, and from what he can discern, he's the only one. Sure, there are plenty of others here, but they are different - not of Easthollow, and the tone of the evening, the jovial murmurs which rise from the gathering... Merrit concludes that this is something different than a diplomatic venture.

He slinks forward yet sticks to the shadows, teetering on the divide of what he wants to do, and what he knows is safe. There are enough breaks between the low hanging branches of the willows that if he turns his head at just the right angles, he can glimpse the silhouettes of the wolves on the other side. The fullness of the moon spills a generous light through the gaps in the canopy above, but not nearly enough to obscure the shadows, and Merrit narrows his eyes with a squint. A shame, that his mother is just as dark as he. Calculated and slow, he turns his watch from one to another as he seeks out the familiar form of Valette amongst the crowd - though he wonders if he'll catch the towering mammoth of Greyback's sooner.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Brilliance - December 24, 2018

she watches her father turn away from her to go... mingle. ugh. she sighs and kicks at the ground. papa doesn’t even want to spend time with her. she looks over to all the other children between olive and seabreeze. children is hardly a word to call them now, but she can’t see them anything but even if they’re all more or less so much bigger than her.

wishing she hadn’t even come here in the first place, she backs up and trots out of the canopy. the bright moon reflects against her coat, not so shiny as her peers, and brightens the prominent curves of all her ribs. if no one wants to be with her, she’ll just leave all together and figure it out for herself.

she doesn’t realize the shadow lurking behind the willows, moving in oblivion to nowhere in particular. it’s not until she comes up on him that she’s startled, gasping and skirting back a step. ”oh!” she gulps, eyes widening at the sight of someone unknown.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Ira - December 24, 2018

The female had been patrolling when she caught sight of the smaller male making his way out of Easthollow's territory. At first, she was confused as to where he might be going in the dead of night, perhaps out looking for his father? Her conversation with the young boy feels like it was ages ago now, but their shared struggle when it came to fathers was burned into her memory. Ira couldn't help but feel bad for the boy. He actually knew his father before he disappeared.

However, as she padded closer to follow, two more scents mingled in her nostrils. Valette and Greyback. The mountain wolf had to suppress a rising growl as she did not want to startle Merrit if he noticed her. Chances are he was following his mother, and seeing how she and Grey had left Easthollow's territory, she found herself curious too. She traveled silently watching over the black wolf as he snuck closer to Elysium's territory. The scent of several wolves hit her hard as they drew near, and while she usually wouldn't trespass, Valette and Greyback had already come through. She could always say she was looking for her leader.

The sound of wolves joining together in song soon hit her ears along with the chatter of many, something that perked her interest more. Just what was going on here that drew the attention of her Matriarch in the dead of night? Golden eyes scanned through the trees at the moonlit opening before she remembered the black wolf she had been following. Now was as good a time as any to reveal herself if he had not caught on to her pawsteps by now. A small voice caught her attention as Ira quickly focused back on the young male and a female who had suddenly appeared. Quite a long stroll for a night walk, Merrit. She would give a small nod to the other pup to acknowledge her presence, but otherwise stood a small distance away. Sorry for the intrusion, I'm afraid we were a bit curious now weren't we? She glanced at the boy hoping he would get her tone if they were not welcome here.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - RIP Valette - December 27, 2018

Cameo until you tag me for more. Haha. I will let Val be oblivious to Merrit and Ira!

It had been already been a fun night so far. There were many wolves Valette didn't know but she was certain that after this night she would have many others that would be acquaintances. However, she had not forgotten with who she was here. She liked that she was here alone with Greyback. Sure, they had their dates in their packlands, and since Greyback's injury Valette had been open to letting Greyback stay in her den. But as far as much public affection she didn't go yet, not on Easthollow grounds at least.

The reason was because she didn't want to make Ira or her children uncomfortable. She knew Merrit was having a tough time adjusting without a father, and she wouldn't want to force this relationship on him. Stark had been gone for awhile but still, it was good to not overthink everything. Valette trotted closer to Greyback, her tail waving behind her. There had been singing and other festivities, so Valette couldn't help but to dance her way to Greyback wanting all his attention (As if she wasn't even getting that before). She was oblivious to the two pack mates that could see them.

Valette licked Greyback's cheek. Her green eyes looked flirty at the male. She had been certain that Greyback would be a good mate. She had seen how he protected her, and how he fussed over her. Valette loved all those little things. The girl, as that was how Valette felt tonight, just a girl, was looking at the male with bedroom eyes. She couldn't really keep her eyes of him, as well.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Merrit - January 02, 2019

Haha sounds excellent! <3 Thanks, everyone, for joining!

Careful to remain in the shadow of the moon, Merrit lifts his head until, over the bustle of the crowd, he catches glimpse of his mother's midnight fur. She is alone, and for just a second his heart relaxes - until he sees the object of her attention, and he stiffens again. Greyback waits for her, and Merrit can't help but feel a stirring of something unpleasant when he notices the way she walks to meet that man who isn't his father: controlled by a peculiar sway, and boasting a countenance he has never seen her wear, not even with Stark.

What is she doing... his brow furrows and his jaw tightens as a group of wolves passes in front of him to temporarily obscure his packmates from view. Merrit his lowers his head to find a new vantage - but his efforts are cut by a noise to his right -- a girl's voice, and with mechanical motion, he clicks his attention to face her, his eyes sharp and startled. If the scuttled hunch of her thin and mottled body says anything, he reckons she feels the same.

He merely stares at her, and he takes in everything the moonlight allows him to see - the glacial brilliance of her eyes, the strange pattern of her fur, the stark shadows that separate rib from rib - and no words come. His thoughts are too rapt on figuring out what to do; too keenly aware that he isn't supposed to be here; too naive of what to do with someone of a different pack, someone his age, let alone, in the middle of trespassing.

A familiar voice is his salvation, and he turns to face her. "Miss Ira!" he hisses in a sharp and quiet breath. His salvation, or his undoing, but he holds out hope that Ira, of anyone in Easthollow, will understand. He still feels the need to explain. "Mother and Greyback left - I needed to know where they were going," and his eyes flicker back to the girl with the dappled fur - wondering how much he can say in front of this stranger, and keenly aware of the glint in Ira's voice - and he is afraid. "I didn't think."

Because even if Valette and Greyback had received a welcome here, he had not - and this puts him in a dangerous position. The girl has every right to tell on him - something he can't afford. He has to make sure mother never finds out he followed her here, so he bows his head to the blue-eyed girl, characteristically stiff in action and word.

He has never been sharp in social finesse. "We will leave," he states abruptly, as much as he wishes to stay, "I'm sorry to have startled you, Miss...?" and he leaves the air open for a name.

lmao sorry for brillo. you're welcome to chase after her! you're also welcome to continue on without her. <3

another wolf shows up and starts talking. at first, she thinks she goes undetected but soon enough they address her. ears twitch upon her skull and she glances over at the ground that has their attention and then back again. had they not been invited, too? she remembers it being a party, and the invitation had gone out to other packs, but she doesn’t really understand the concept. she’s never really meant another wolf outside of her pack until morningside, or whatever, had merged into the willows with them.

still.

“uh, no,” she says and, frantically turns on her heels and darts off into the darkness.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Ira - January 09, 2019

She watched as the small child scrambled, mostly shocked by the reaction. Then again if she was not expecting two uninvited wolves to whatever this was, running made sense. Either way it didn't feel right to linger. Ira glanced back to the young boy and raised her brows. Why don't you explain to me on the way back home? Besides-- She raised her head looking to the gathering through the treeline, You now know.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Merrit - January 09, 2019

<3 For now, he will let her run - thought I'd love for Merrit to meet Brilliance again!

This is not how he intends his apology to go, and the stranger's reaction stings him - but there is nothing he can do. He can't cry out for her to stop - he isn't supposed to be here - and even if he could, she kicks into the darkness before a word can touch his thoughts.

As fast as she came, she is gone, and he is left to frown at the slightest space she once filled.

He takes a step to follow, because something about her disturbs him, and he knows what. From the buckle of her body to the quickness of her flight, she reminds him of Keen - but he is redirected by the sound of Ira's voice, and reluctantly, he turns away, and toward his friend instead.

Merrit doesn't need to look back through the willows to know what Ira means. He has seen the meaning himself - but he finds himself stealing another glance - and then, he turns away.

He nods and pulls away from where the willows sigh. The festivities still swell with laughter and mirth, yet Merrit finds them cold against the yuletide air. Somewhere between the trees, his mother weaves with Greyback, and everything is cold - and he wills himself to walk away with his friend, silent, until the willows are far behind them, and the moon stretches shadows across the snow-covered ground.

Finally, he speaks.

"Mother loves him, doesn't she?"

He pauses.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

To this point, Merrit thought that wolves only hid when they were afraid. It's what he's seen in Keen. But now he wonders if wolves also hide when what they do is too shameful to bring to the light - and his bones settle like ice while his words tumble forth. "Did she love him like that when dad was still here? Is that why dad left us?" Was he why dad left.

RE: [YULE] What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong - Ira - January 15, 2019

Ira padded silently next to the dark pelted boy. She had seen enough and preferred leaving now in case the pup that ran off brought friends. She had been keeping her eyes ahead of them until Merrit spoke up causing her gaze to drift down. "Mother loves him, doesn't she?" A frown pulled at her lips as he continued. She did not have all the answers. She could not say if they were involved while his father was around, but she prayed that was not the case for the sake of Merrit.

It appears that way, yes. I can not say why she did not tell you, but I assume it is because Stark left. She likely did not want to hurt you more. The mountain wolf glanced up to the light of the full moon filtering through the tree branches. I had my suspicions about our parents, but I do not think Valette was interested when Stark left. I recall her telling me how sad she was to keep losing mates.
