do you mind crouching down a little bit so i look taller. - Yami - March 09, 2019

The waves were crashing loudly upon the shore, but still Yami crept as quietly as she could towards her target. The gulls were settled in scattered clumps across the beach ahead, unaware yet that they were being hunted. She was determined to keep it that way until the very last second when it would be too late. Too late for them, anyway.

So far, she'd had no luck whatsoever at hunting these foul sky rats. They took off too quickly and once they were in the air, there was obviously no hope for her to continue after them. But at the moment, they were the only prey she could find. Thus far, she hadn't done much to actually be useful to Rusalka, unless all the failed hunts she had to her name somehow won her some bragging rights (which she doubted). She had to do something, or she'd go crazy. So...

Yami sprang. She rushed along the beach to close the last few yards between herself and her quarry. The gulls began to cry as they took to the sky in waves of white and gray. The girl lunged, but fell short of the bird's tail by a good two feet. She cried out, "DAMNIT," just as her paws hit the sand. She shook her coat in frustration and snarled up at the sky as the birds wheeled overhead, mocking her, laughing at her with their calls.

"Bunch of assholes..." she murmured as she dropped her gaze back to the sand. Gods, she hated it here.

RE: do you mind crouching down a little bit so i look taller. - RIP Firefly - March 09, 2019

Since becoming the Sound's resident donor Firefly had doubled, then tripled, his efforts to keep the pack safe and prepared. It would be some time before the fruit of his labour came about. He had spent the past week fortifying the borders to the point where a stranger might mistake him as the alpha; thus he turned his attention away from the borders and began to work on things within the territory instead.

He cleared debris from the beach. Investigated the caves for danger. Even, whether it was welcome or not, checked in on the two women and doted upon them with his attention and various gifts. Mostly food. His last gift was the freshly dead body of a fat gull, and after delivering it to @Rosalyn, Firefly set off again to find further objects of worth.

This was how he came to be upon the beach at the same time as Yama, and heard the violent shout of their voice from further along the sand bank. He wasted no time in his approach but seemed apathetic to the plight of the youth as he came upon their position.

Her murmured comment made him raise his brows, holding back a smirk. Problem?

Yami spun in surprise at hearing a voice so nearby. When her eyes landed on Firefly, she settled, but only a little. A shock of embarassment stabbed through as she realized he must've seen her fuck up her hunt. She wanted to impress him still as she'd clearly done when they'd first met (I mean, he'd brought her home with him), and this incident was clearly not going to help her with that.

She bit her lip, but straightened and put on her most charming facade. No where to go but up. "Yeah," Yami replied with an easy smirk, "These birds won't just lie down and let me kill them." She glanced overhead again as the gulls began to wheel away to settle back down in the sands further along the beach.

Birds? He leaned himself away from Yami and peered at the surroundings, noticing a plethora of birds coasting in the warmer air high over the sea, but a few gulls occupying themselves in the grass a good distance away. One was a touch closer, but was just reconnecting with the rest of its flock - likely a missed target.

The tone of Yami's voice didn't hold an ounce of defeat and that was a good sign. Whether it was genuine was another question, but Firefly wasn't apt enough to notice. They both watched the birds for a few moments before the man shrugged his broad shoulders, feeling the pinch of the knotted scars shifting.

The trick is to ignore the birds, which sounded counter-intuitive. Go after some prey by not going after it? He glanced at her to watch for reactions, but continued regardless: They're lazy, they liked to scavenge the beach for shit we leave behind or for shells, sometimes the shells have food. Instead of running right at them you have to fake them out. Easier said than done, but it was a strategy nonetheless. Act like you've found something better than them, and they'll be stupid enough to get close. They want food too but they never want to work for it.

Hopefully it made sense. He could show her but - the prospect of failing after giving such sage advice would defeat the lesson.

Yami had been going for a laugh, which she didn't get. The disappointment stung for a moment, but she wasn't deterred. To her surprise, he began to instruct her on how to actually succeed at hunting birds. She peered quizzically at him as he spoke, considering. It did sort of make sense, but also didn't seem very likely to work. Why would any prey let a predator get close to them for any reason?

"Can you show me?" she asked, curious now to see this in action and also wanting to give him an opportunity to show off for her. It would also give her the opportunity to shower him with admiration when he succeeded, or sweet consolation if he failed. Men loved that kind of crap.

My rolls in the tabletop channel failed me, rip.

He knew she'd ask. She had that expectant look, doubting his assertion that the plan would work. She wanted proof. Even before Yami asked him to go and do the thing he saw that look and knew he was doomed. After her prompting he took a deep breath - considering his options with some haste. Maybe an excuse could get him out of a demonstration. He had a bad leg! He had other work to do! He gave her the instructions so she should try it out herself! But he ended up moving ahead with the plan. At the very least Firefly could grab some more birds for the caches.

The man parted from Yami's company with an easy stride, head dipping so that he could feign interest in the sand and the scrub grass. The birds might've been aware of the pair of wolves but they didn't come any closer, not until Firefly paused over a pile of empty shells that had been tossed against the rocks, and began to dig at the loose debris. He picked at it and outright ignored the birds, and some of them - noticing the commotion - coasted closer, and closer, and closer -

And when a stupid juvenile gull landed in the grass (thinking itself to be hidden, he supposed), Firefly tensed and launched himsel.f at it — his forequarter temporarily blending in with the pale gold of the grass. His rear end was a black smudge against the bleached debris below his body, and when he pulled away from the grass Yami might've expected triumph and bloodshed, but... The bird gave a series of awkward honks as it fought to keep clear of those teeth, and was soaring off moments later. All that Firefly had to show for it was a disheveled appearance and a few puffs of feather stuck to his lion mane.

Well shit. That's exactly what he was afraid would happen.

As she'd hoped, Firefly stepped forward to perform as she'd requested. She smiled as he looked away from her, pleased with herself for being able to persuade him. As he began to stalk his prey, Yami was swept away with wondering if this meant he liked her. Would he have done it for another girl? Or was he doing this because he wanted her? The thought kept her smile in place as he leaped, and held it there even when the gull took flight and winged safely away from the hunter. Yami trotted forward to step up to his side.

"Wow! You definitely came closer than I ever have," she praised, flashing him a smile, "I get what you mean now about how they'll come nearer if you ignore them. I never considered before that that might work." She looked at him admiringly for a moment before turning to look around for more birds. "D'you think they'd do the same if we went together?" she asked. It didn't seem likely they wouldn't be wary of two wolves. But then again, it hadn't seemed likely that they wouldn't be wary of one.

He didn't like to lose. It was an aspect of his personality that existed pre-cougar attack and would probably take him to an early grave if he gave in to it. Somehow Firefly knew that he'd fail at the attempt and now that he had been proven right, he was still quite flustered and made a bit irritable, regardless of what the girl was saying. Still, it took most of the edge off of how sour he felt - and he glared at the retreating birds until Yami proposed they both try, together.

Firefly huffed, tried to dispel that nagging little voice in his mind that was laughing at him for his fuck-up, and eventually shrugged. Its unlikely we could catch them now. They're dumb but they'll keep away from me for a day or two. Its sort of... Sort of an all-or-nothing tactic. Which was why he was frowning so seriously at the screeching silhouettes. Ah, but he didn't want to dissuade her from trying again. He tried to fashion himself a smile when he looked at her but he couldn't help but look a little bit pissed off at himself.

What else have you tried to hunt? Maybe we can find something in the forest..? Yeah. They'd have better luck somewhere else. Somewhere that he couldn't hear those birds laughing at him.

RE: do you mind crouching down a little bit so i look taller. - Yami - March 21, 2019

Yami felt a jolt in her stomach as he turned her down. His reasoning had nothing to do with her, obviously, but she immediately determined that it was because he didn't like her. She frowned at the birds, feeling frustrated and hurt and stupid and childish. Of course he didn't want her. No one did. She was never going to be good enough for anyone. And on it went, swirling down the black hole that was her self-esteem.

Her ears perked when he asked her a question. She looked over at him as she tried to come up with an answer. What had she tried hunting? And had he just said "we"? "Uh.. mostly rabbits and squirrels. I've hunted deer before, but not on my own," she offered, brightening a bit, "Oh, and I tried to hunt a porcupine once. It didn't go well..." She wasn't sure why she decided to add that fact. If anything, it made her look even stupider. Maybe she was just that stupid.

Firefly didn't laugh, but the expression on his face as he glanced at her suggested he wasn't overly impressed. The conversation slipped from their grasp then, and Yami was quite content to see it go. She'd already shared too much about that particular story, anyway.

They spent the afternoon hunting for rabbits until they'd finally caught a couple. Yami settled in to consume hers while Firefly took his away with him--where he didn't say, and Yami was too self-conscious to ask. It probably went to a cache. Or it went to some girl... She spent her meal fretting about that idea until she was full, and then she proceeded to spend the rest of her day fretting about it some more.
