hold me - Reyes (Ghost) - May 10, 2019

A sibling?

Something about the air was uncomfortable. It was usually warm in the den space because of all the bodies, but it was different today and Reyes didn't like it; he felt the oppressive sensation of humidity pressing down at the den mouth. He slunk around in the depths of shadow like a shabby rat shuffling from spot to spot. It was a good place to hide as things got warmer. As the clouds rolled in through the afternoon like a heavy blanket the pressure increased, and the babe could feel a weight around his eyes.

It wasn't right, this ache. He was squinting more often, to the point that it appeared as though Reyes' opened eyes had shut again and he was aging in reverse; what would come next? The folding of ears? The regurgitation of milk? His body disassembling? Would his mother find him in an hour as a puddle of useless soup?

He tried to raise his head and whistle, as he had in the night. He couldn't quite get his mouth to obey him. His neck was stiff and sore, so Reyes dropped down to the den floor and scuttled closer to one body or another. He burrowed his blunt nose against one of them — unsure of which sibling because he'd squished his eyes completely shut — and murmured useless pleas for aid in to the plush of their fuzz.

yes, the air was heavy and thick and tense with something she had no name for, but even more disconcerting was the pressure against her flank, the low sounds and vibrations emitting from one of her siblings. she wiggled crossly, emitting her own murmurs of discontent, before clumsily and tiredly attempting the climb atop her sibling, sure that if only she sat on his head he'd be more comfortable, and that things would return to the way they ought to be.

Of all the ways to fix a headache, to sit on the afflicted person's face wasn't often dubbed a remedy. The shifting of bodies brought one shapely bottom in to contact with Reyes' sore head, so he began to yowl. For one thing, no self respecting individual would condone this strange behavior. Then again, her squirming body seemed to alleviate at least some of the pressure. Before long the child had stopped his protesting. He lay prone and humming nonsense, content beneath the weight and warmth of his sister.

her brother's yowls, while sounding strange and uncomfortable through half-developed ears, nonetheless added to the scratchy ball of agitation seemingly settled in her chest, growing ever larger and prickly. she'd did not pause her efforts, however, and in a moment her brother settled and her stiffened shoulders relaxed, some of the tension alleviated. she required still an outlet for her agitation trapped beneath her pelt still, and so found the nearest part of her brother she could - a shoulder, easy to grasp - and set about gnawing at it.
