@Merrick had yet to reappear to the hauntwood; such a prolonged absence was unlike him.
at first the wraith revisited each of their fond hideouts — the den was bare of his scent, and had been for some days. no paw print of his adorned the snow-studded footpath, and no marking of him along the perimeters.
she noted too, one other absence. the dark leviathan that was their leader.
astara was not a woman to sit and wait and bemoan whatever fate had fallen upon her. jaw set in a gritty grimace, the blackbird stood at the berth of nightwalker’s clandestine claim — a lone silhouette cut through roving fog.
and then with a dip of her black head, she was gone — following her nose and her lover east.
