holes in your coffin - Antha - November 16, 2019

@Kaito
It's a meager kill, yet the scent of blood quickly draws scavengers and thieves from the shadows nonetheless. The rustling draws her attention immediately, wary as she is. Her ears flick back as she pauses mid-tear, lifting her head from the slain squirrel with some reluctance. The scent of coyote fills the air, and she sees eyes glinting at her through the scant, hazy evening light.
And then the beasts are upon her, emboldened by hunger and perhaps hoping she will flee. She does not. She is no warrior, but her own gnawing hunger demands that she defend her meal. She lunges for the largest of the three, sensing its shock as her jaws close around the back of its neck. The other two scatter, scrambling back noisily as she grapples with their shrieking companion. She feels teeth ripping at her shoulder and leg, though it comes as pressure rather than pain, dulled by the adrenaline rushing through her. Her grip tightens, and she shakes the coyote violently, ripping its teeth away from her and snapping its neck with the force of it. By the time she's able to make herself drop the dead beast, its brethren are gone, along with her squirrel. Then the pain comes, and all she can do is sit back and force herself to breathe.

RE: holes in your coffin - Kaito - November 19, 2019

Thanks for starting! :D

He would usually be heading back by now. To the little cave he'd found off the side of Goat Mountain. Home, as some might call it. And he wished he could have said there was some great reason that he'd stayed here out longer -- collecting new plants, perhaps, or meeting fresh faces in this still unfamiliar land. But honestly, the end of it was he had simply dozed off, and he'd sure done so rather... um... unexpectedly... the poppies he'd collected still lay at the edge of his make-shift nest, mainly just a swath of grass he'd collapsed into after feeling his grogginess take over.

So now it was night, and stars blinked into focus somewhere in the sky overhead -- at least, he figured so. Couldn't really see beyond the overcast sky, and anyway, his head still felt a bit foggy from the nap. But nothing a good scream of a coyote couldn't solve -- or, um, a lot of coyotes, and he jumped in place as the shadows of the night peeled away, to give way to a dim recognition of a scattering scuffle up ahead.

Two bodies peel away from the fight, and the noise of the night dimmed to silence. Kaito feels, no, probably hears, his thumping heart project into the night, and he clamps his teeth against his tongue to quiet the cry of surprise that rises within. And then he's moving forward, toward the mass hunched over upon the barren land. Fur on end, and troubled eyes bright with the illumination of the clouds, he shouts before thinking, "Hey! Hey, you alright?"

The smell of blood -- squirrel and coyote and wolf -- meet him all at once, and his mind finally catches up with his feet. Kaito staggers to a stop and skids back a step or two, half ready to help, and half ready to book himself off in the direction the rest of the brawling party has already scattered, if this... um... shadowy mass takes a snap at him, too.

RE: holes in your coffin - Lieke - November 19, 2019

oops! i shadow posted, so edited to account for that!
feel free to skip her

She had been forced to watch the entire scene play out below from the tree where she was safely perched. She could do nothing for her companion; she was no match for one coyote, let alone three, and so she had watched in horror as Antha fought the scavengers off, fighting and killing one while the other two took off with her meal. She peered down from her branch after everything went quiet, afraid to come down right away in case danger still lingered nearby. When things seemed safe, Lieke finally scurried down the tree but froze when the unfamiliar scent of wolf filled her busy nose. Immediately she ran back up the tree, emitting disgruntled squeaks once safely back within the branches. She wanted to check on her friend, but she didn't trust the stranger, especially after what had happened last time. So she was forced to watch again, hoping that this one wasn't set on causing anymore trouble...not that she could do much about it.
