The mountains loomed in the near distance, but Timberlake didn't want to cross them until all potential leads had been exhausted on this side of the range. He hadn't ever gone in that direction, and he would be lying if he said he didn't have some trepidation about it. Everything to the north of him was at least somewhat familiar, if only infinitesimally so.
Across the mountains. . .complete unknown.
He approached the willows instead, a twinge of recognition hitting him as he looked upon the cascading canopy. Willows. . .hadn't someone mentioned Morningside settling here, after the maplewood? It seemed familiar and he went with it; there was hope to find more of his family in this forest if it were true.
And there were wolves here; he smelled their markings upon the edge of the trees. Not as strong as other pack-scents, true, but there seemed a fair number. Enough to make a settlement. Timberlake howled for an audience, standing a short, respectful distance from their claim.
