you know what they do to guys like us in prison? - Surya - March 21, 2020

this was beyond ridiculous. it was snowing again and showed no signs of stopping, despite the fact that winter had gone on seemingly forever. surya missed the sun—his namesake—the bright spring days and fresh green grass. but the sun was hiding, the bright spring days were nowhere in sight, and the fresh green grass was presumably buried underneath the new blanket of white.

surlier than ever before, the yearling stumbled upon the borders by accident, not realizing within the whirlwind that he had been wandering close to the pack's claim. it smelled like that man here. . .the one chasing rabbits in the field.

what was his name. . .?

he remembered his question to evien: do you not have a pack to shelter with? well, surya sure didn't, and in the wake of this endless winter, he was beginning to hate being alone. he shuffled along the territory line for a little while, indecisive. staring forward into the swirling flakes, his face set in a scowl. his need for independence was warring with a childlike desire to belong.

and when his nose and pads began to freeze over, he came to a determined halt. howled into the gale, seeking attention. he may not have much to give a group of wolves, but he could always learn—and they certainly would have a lot to give him.

RE: you know what they do to guys like us in prison? - Chai - March 21, 2020

Hope you don't mind me hopping in!

For once, Chai could be found sticking close to home, instead of venturing out for a little peek around. She had good reason to stay close to the pack. Although the snow didn't make it seem so, she knew full well that spring had arrived. It was early yet, but she could already sense the change in the air. There was much change within the pack too. Only days ago, had Dawn given birth to a healthy litter of four precious cubs. Tiny, innocent lives that were to protected and nourished, selflessly. Other new lives would soon follow, with Kaori and Grezig also expecting. With the tragic loss of Salvatore, the pack needed to work as one more than ever.

She had been trying to pick up the trail she had recently lost of the local herd of deer. The newly fallen snow was a nuisance, blending their scent in amongst many others. She was concerned they may move on soon, to a more sheltered habitat so the does could give birth to their fawns safely. It was something she'd have to keep on top of, or else search for other options. By chance, she had been tracking near the border, close to the edge where someone was right at their doorstep. Ears pricking, she paused mid stride, squinting softly towards the agouti figure. Hm, she didn't recognize him as anyone in their ranks. Turning, she approached swiftly but cautiously, unsure of his exact intentions. Chai carried herself like an unmistakable pack wolf, but certainly not one who was high ranking. Dominance and leadership just weren’t her thing. She cleared her throat, addressing him in her usual soft voice. "Hello. May I be of assistance...?"

RE: you know what they do to guys like us in prison? - Surya - March 22, 2020

a pretty russet woman appeared amid the snow, vibrant against a sea of white. surya smiled in acknowledgement of her question and nodded, trying to keep his teeth from chattering. i'm surya, the yearling introduced himself. i was wondering—ah, does artyom live here? i know artyom. . .and, i, ah. . .

he shook his head, laughing at his own scattered thoughts. the cold had made him brainless! i was wondering if this pack could have a place for me, he finally spat out, eyes slightly longing. i would do whatever was needed. . .i just, ah. . .need a home. i've been traveling alone for too long.

there it was: the end of his self-imposed solitude. he had ran with small bands here and there, but none he would consider a pack—just little groups of two or three or four young men who'd found themselves on the road as well. it was time to pledge himself. . .and if he wasn't going to return home (at least not anytime soon) he might as well pledge himself here.

RE: you know what they do to guys like us in prison? - Artyom - March 28, 2020

"Surya?" Artyom called out to boy beyond the trees as he squinted in attempt to shield his gaze from whirling snow. He moved in alongside his pack-mate, stifled close enough to Chai to bump his shoulder fondly to a tawny flank, though his attention remained on their visitor. "It is Surya, isn't it?"

He recalled him from the lands to the East, where he'd been observed failing to fell his intended prey. Artyom hadn't caught what the yearling had said to the blue-eyed huntress, though he did wonder what it was that brought him to their forest in such poor weather.

Chai felt a tinge of relief upon seeing the stranger smile. So he was friendly, bearing no ill intentions towards her or the pack. In fact, he offered a name that was very familiar to her indeed. Artyom. Her brows shot up, a pleasant smile returned towards him. "Ah yes, yes he does. He's a good man." She nodded, having nothing but good to say about Dawn's mate.

Surya, as he called himself, explained that he was looking for a place within Whitebark Stream. His timing couldn't be better. The more paws they had on deck to help keep up with the arrival of new pups, would certainly be appreciated. Her tail began a slow, easy wag. "Well...that's not my place to say, but..." She had just been about ready to issue a summons for Artyom, when speak of the devil, he showed up himself. Pale eyes lighting up, she greeted him with just simple, warm look, before stepping back modestly, watching Surya with an encouraging little look.

the conversation might have gone in a roundabout way—and surya was more than happy to engage in idle chit-chat under better weather circumstances—but luckily for the both of them, artyom appeared, half-blending in with the winter white. surya gave him a grin, albeit a shaky one, feeling his shoulders sag slightly with relief.

it is surya, he confirmed, nodding. artyom—i have come looking for a home. do you have room for me within your ranks?

he sure hoped so. even if artyom did not, perhaps he would stretch or ignore the truth, at least while the storm raged on. he wouldn't be so callous as to toss an acquaintance out into the cold with no place to stay. . .right? artyom didn't seem like that kind of wolf—surya fervently hoped he was not mistaken.

The wind whipped between them and Artyom narrowed his eyes against the biting cold. He watched the tawny yearling's shoulders slackened and his expression shift to one of relief, and a gilded ear flicked to catch an unexpected request. "Of course we do," he said warmly, making to exchange a brief glance with Chai before he pressed forward toward their newest recruit.

"Come," he circled around Surya so that he too faced Whitebark territory and could lean in against his side, eager to encourage him deeper into the woods and out of the harsh weather's reach. "Let's find someplace to dry off, hm?"

We can archive if you want.

Standing by with a gently wagging tail, Chai waited for Artyom to make his decision. And it was one that didn't surprise her, since the two males apparently were friendly acquaintances. Pale eyes gleaming, she offered Surya a warm smile once his acceptance was made official. She was beginning to get fidgety though, her paws starting to chill, courtesy of the less than pleasant weather. Following Artyom's lead, she turned to escort the newest member of Whitebark Stream deeper into the heart of the territory. "I know just the spot..." She offered, happy to share with the both of them her shelter of choice away from the dens whilst out on patrol. They could wait out this weather together.

sure!

it turned out to be even easier than he thought to gain entrance. artyom seemed more than happy to welcome him to whitebark stream, and the woman—still nameless—began to lead him to a place they could ride out the storm.

thank you, surya murmured, blinking appreciatively at his new leader as exhaustion began to set in. heavy-lidded, heavy-stepped, he made his way to the resting place. he wasn't exactly sure how he would feel in the morning, having essentially replaced his old home with something new. for now, though, he was filled with nothing but relief.
