Stripes/Brindle? - Santiago Arcos - May 08, 2020

Is a wolf-dog mix allowed to have brindle like stripes? Or even stripes not as drastic but kind of like an Okapi coming up the legs like that. But more brindle-ish.

i'd think a wolf-dog would be allowed to have brindle stripes if it's a breed that can have them. i.e. great dane, dutch shepherd.

I've been curious about this as well, I was told early on when I joined (back in Jan 2019) that brindle wasn't allowed even on wolfdogs.

And if they arent, why so? Just curious, as we allow merle wolfdogs.

Stripes and brindling are two separate things genetically.

Stripes are a coat pattern that include the skin as well. There are no stripes in extant canine species, so no stripes are allowed on WOLF. Brindle was likely included in this category in the past because people would use brindle as an excuse to have stripes.

Brindle is a coat/color modifier. Brindle only occurs in domestic canids and does not occur in purebred wolves in the wild. It is unlikely to be present in a wolf/dog given it is recessive over agouti and black. I’d suggest researching the mode of inheritance in brindles; it’s a recessive trait with multiple modes of inheritance, and is not something that can crop up at random — unlike piebald and spots (which are sometimes incorrectly attributed to merle on the forum). It’s been a long time since I’ve done any reading on coat color genetics but it’s my understanding it’s much harder to inherit brindle than merle.

True Merle is also autosomal dominant, unlike brindle — so there is an argument for it being realistic to show up in a wolfdog hybrid if one of the parents was merle.

As it stands now, stripes are firmly verboten and always have been.

Lately players have been making comments about WOLF really getting away from the “realism” part of the game. If this is something players feel strongly over I suggest someone opens up a discussion about what coat colors should be allowed or disallowed.

Since you bring up brindle in genes, if a dog breed that is known to be brindle is mixed in then it would be okay no? I’m basing my next character on an Akita/Wolf mix
