many wreaths of roses - Erzulie - May 15, 2020

nieve was gone. reyes was gone. marisol had become scarce again. the woman that had plagued their lives had entered without warning and she could not forget the face nor the struggle in the grove alongside rosencrantz.
erzulie circled that evening, but found no trace of her golden daughter, and when she returned to @Solaire and @Arcelia, it was with face wetted saltwater and a curse in her throat.
for them she brought back a chunk of sea-scoured bone, perhaps dislodged from the ribcage of a great whale. to the clearing she arrived, and she gathered her little ones close with a melancholy tightening her eyes.

at present, solaire lacked emotional empathy. she did not really know that her mother was heartbroken; had she known she might've done what she could to console her with her limited abilities. instead, for now she numbly teethed at the end of the bone, but soon grew bored, freeing the thing from her jaws and gazing up at her cinnamon mother with wide blue eyes. mm, she mumured to herself quietly, approaching her mother on steady little feet that were just learning to walk.

solaire's tottering steps caused a smile to leap into life upon erzulie's face. "très magnifique, ma petite rose." she must seek to concentrate on the good things, the wonderful things, happening just before her, and encouraged solaire with a gentle laugh. "you be runnin' before we all know it."

When their mother arrived home, Arcelia was asleep; undisturbed by the approach, she dreamed freely. She dreamed of following after her mother and seeing all that she did, of the wonders she was sure she was missing out on. But those dreams were not able to linger for long, the sound of her sister gnawing on something rousing her; she rolled over and attempted to find sleep once more but, despite her best efforts, she could not return to her nap when her mother’s voice tickled her ears.

Rolling once more, the hooded child looked to Erzulie curiously, trying (and failing) to understand her. For now, beyond her wide-eyes, she gave no other indications that she’d awoken.

a smile grew on the face of her mother- solaire knew by some instinct that this was a good thing. she was safe here, and maman was happy, and that brought her a simple joy as well. the awakening of her sister went unnoticed as the golden child finally reached the gigantic paw of her mother. here she became curious, and bumped a wet nose against it, somehow still surprised when it touched her back- and so she pulled away rather suddenly, staring at it before her head tilted up to the face of her mother, as if she would offer some explanation in her mystery language.

arcelia's owlish gaze and solaire's nudge inspired a deeper happiness in erzulie; she surveyed them both with a curious light and then spoke again. "arcelia," she murmured softly of her paler child, "viens ici avec nous." a moment and then she was reaching to sweep the girl closer, urging her toward solaire.
